Is learning to drive manual hard?

I've seen a few videos of it. It doesnt look too bad. I want to learn but I'm not sure how long it will take.

The dance of feet & clutch us something you have to get the "hang" of...

It gives you much more direct control over the engine, rather than the automatic transmission.

In talking with various drivers of standard shift vehicles, it seems to be a general consensus that such transmissions often have been either "tricky" to get into 1st gear/get going from a dead stop, or "tricky" to change into other gears...where "tricky" is what a novice experiences.

(A study done years ago split a driver's ed course into 2 groups & taught one group entirely on automatic transmissions, the other, on manual transmissions.

After completing the course, students were given a short training on the driving a vehicle with the "other" transmission, and asked to do this, and successfully navigate a traffic cone course laid out in a big parking lot.

The result was that it was easier for people trained on *manual* transmissions to learn how to successfully use an automatic transmission than to go the other way.)
