They are very nutritious with a lot of protein, calcium and omega-3 in a small package. I was first introduced to them as something to take along on a hike as part of a light meal since the can doesn't require refrigeration or take up much room and is easy to open.
But the best, in my opinion are brislings (small and, i think always, from the Baltic Sea packed in E.V. olive oil). King Oscar is a favorite brand; Crown Prince also good. The can usually says "two layer-12-22 fish". King Oscar "Tiny Tots", in a yellow rather than red wrapper, seem to be identical .

I do like then, especially when packed in mustard. I can't compare their taste to anything, but it's a rich, heavier taste. I've always eaten them on crackers.

@Ontheroad Just the tins in oil: squeeze out the oil, and serve them on hot toast. The food of Kings!

@CharlesRomsey Agree, I take mine out of the tin, lay them on a few thicknesses of paper towels, then put on crackers. The ones that have mustard added to the oil just give it a bit of zing. I eat them on crackers mainly because that's the way my dad ate them... I'll have to try them on toast.

@Ontheroad For me, it's a great breakfast food: there is so much goodness in there that keeps you going for the remainder of the morning.

I grew up in a poor family so I used to eat canned sardines for dinner and pretend it was chicken.. it does not taste that good but it’s editable and nutritious.

@Wallflow3r try the brisling (see my comment below). You may find them to be much more delicate in taste.

A bit of a strong taste but great for a sandwich with white bread and thin slices of cucumber. I cook the sardines first, although i dont have to, with a bit of pepper
@SW-User Terrific right out of the can!!

They have a fairly strong taste in the canned type... Fresh ones are better but harder to find... Suggestion, try a small piece first

@Convivial The best are in a seafront café in Portugal.... <sigh>

Strong taste.
I eat them regularly.
Drain the oil, mash them with a fork. On toast with pepper. Great for a quick easy snack.

I like those in mustard, but my mother and now my wife would not allow them inside the house. They were regular campout fare.

As a kid I loved them on toast. I don’t eat them so much now, lot richer taste to them than white fish.

Not really, the tin silt sardines in oil I eat when I feel I need some omega and calcium

My dad likes them. The smell is too revolting for me to try.
