Let's be prepared in a reasonable manner 🙂

Ok so, people are panicking and buying stuff that are not really necessary (of course it's subjective but we'll debate about that later). What are the things you have or planning to stock up to prepare this pandemic?

Of course the basics are sanitizer, wipes, grains, rice noodles, canned food, batteries, condense milk, 3 in 1 sachets, instant noodles etc... What else?
After being isolated for 3 weeks and yet 3 to 4 more to go, here is my list:

- alcohol 70% by volume

- gloves

- food of any kind for you and your pet

- necessary medicine

- hygenic and sanetizing material

- laundry powder

- batteries and lamps

- music and movies

- books

- games

- first aid kit so if God forbid anything happens you dont have to go to hospital
@basilfawlty89

Lol... nope, not by that one...

Yes, indeed....

What I find funny about this whole thing is nobody is buying tissues when it’s a respiratory illness. You don’t get the shits from it and yet toilet paper can’t be found.

@Keepitsimple Hahahaha

@cherokeepatti Well that's ONE of the other worries about all this.
I mean they suspected it was happening.
They still allowed flights to continue.
They still allowed folk to go to that area even once they knew.
They allowed folk who had been in that area to fly either home or elsewhere afterwards.
I mean if you were of a mind to watch what happens if you release a new agent among the worlds population this would certainly be one way to do it.

Al kinds of theories being surmised all over the world at the moment.
One i heard yesterday said that they thought it a conspiracy between governments to ensure people were sufficiently scared enough to stay home; order everything from their own country and have it delivered thus helping to keep their respective economies going.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Picklebobble2 Psssttt it’s not about a virus. The reports are exaggerated. They haven’t released names or obituaries of the 16 elderly who have died in a nursing home. Wonder why?
JeanAnna · F
I haven't stocked up on anything. Just did my weekly shopping Wednesday. I did buy a bottle of Lysol spray, but I always have that on hand. My pantry is always full of food, and my freezer is always full too. Hopefully this won't last very long and things will get back to normal soon.

My one worry is going out to eat. Is that safe or not. We never know who is cooking the food and if they are sick or not.

@Stereoguy Enjoy the car show, etc. But stay safe and healthy.

@Stereoguy Wow, lot of really cool classic cars there. Thanks for sharing them with me/us.

I purchased my normal month of supplies last month, but found they were out of things I actually use, virus or no virus. The Clorox wipes were out of stock, and I could not get bleach from my local store. I did get bleach and wipes and everything I need. A very kind lady from my local church brought them and left them at my door last Sunday when I was having body aches, chills, and violent shaking. Thankfully that only last 24 hours. Prior to her charitable visit, I had also ordered bleach from the nationwide Walmart warehouse, and they had it in stock. It arrived three days ago.

I will continue as I normally do. Last month I did order canned tuna and canned chicken, and extra cans of tomato soup, and next month I will probably order a large bag of brown rice.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@4meAndyou so many good dishes made with brown rice
4meAndyou · F
@cherokeepatti They are still carbs, but brown rice is a whole grain and I am now limited to whole grains...no white or processed carbs.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@4meAndyou Brown rice tastes nutty, very satisfying. You need some carbs for proper thyroid function
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I'm not preparing at all. I already have food. I have a normal supply of toilette paper. I don't see the need for batteries since the power won't go out if people get the cold. I work in the grocery industry and the shelves will be restocked after everyone finishes panic buying. In fact our sales yesterday (because they announced the closures of schools) were up 150% from last year when our year to date increase before was about 2%. totally insane! I can see stocking up in sanitizer though.

Better get a gun and prepare for the zombie apocalypse :P @Darkmare

@JimboSaturn Hahah... Yea, I can see that happening. I went out to get coffee and people were just staring at each other in fear. Like they were thinking "Is this person sick? Does this person have Covid19? Smh 😓
Miram · 31-35, F
Excessively stocking up is not good.

It will make it impossible for those in need to find things that they would die without, and in some regions people will take advantage and increase the prices. Meaning more poverty.

Necessities to me are things your life and other people's lives depend on:
- foods that actually last,
- medications for your chronic illness,
- OTC fever reducer in case you caught up the virus. Please don't use it unless you're absolutely sure you need it. Don't use them for period pain and don't stock up more than three tablets per person.
- water
- enough soap
-60 percent alcohol sanitizers.

- Bleach solutions to wash your kitchen items, floor, and all surfaces.

-94n masks to protect yourself from catching the virus (if they are hard to find please leave them for professionals because they have to be in contact with patients much more than you do. If they are infected they will ultimately make everyone else sick

-Goggles for the same purpose

-Surgical masks in case you have to leave the house or go to the emergency and you have respiratory symptoms, this is so you don't infect others. And hotlines may request you to wear it.

Just a note about the gloves. I saw someone previously suggesting it will lower your risk of catching the infection. That is not entirely true and I doubt it, in a professional setting we do use gloves but not alone. You still have to wash hands frequently. And no pair of gloves can be used for two tasks because you will be contaminating your environment, transmitting the virus from an area to another. From a patient to a patient. They are thrown away and hands are washed afterwards. Also since you will have to take it off, you will be using one hand to remove it.

Just make sure to wash your hands as frequently as possible, the right way. And perhaps get disposable towels to close the water tap with after drying hands.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
yes our store shelves are empty now, ridiculous. The fire marshall had to close one of our stores and their was almost fighting. @Darkmare
Darkmare · 36-40, F
@JimboSaturn I believe people are concerned about the economy, exploitation and supply chain issues, but what can we do about it when others are sweeping everything off the shelves? It is a dumb idea to overdo it, but it is tough to see empty shelves. I feel left out lol
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Yes there will be supply chain issues for a while for sure. And the stock market crashing right now is not good either. Tourism will be severely rocked. Restaurants, and any based on the leisure economy will be hurt. I know the grocery chain I work for would never raise prices. @Darkmare
It's a virus not a hurricane!
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
agreed! @Darkmare
@Darkmare I understand the hand sanitizer and maybe the tissue but you don't need batteries. You don't need noodles or any food. And I don't even know what 3 in 1 sachets are.
Darkmare · 36-40, F
@quitwhendone 3 in 1 sachets... milk, sugar and coffee in a sachet :P
tiggerandariel13 · 41-45, MVIP
I went to Sams I got milk bread eggs k-cups baby wipes just 1 case laundry detergent and hand sanitizer just 1

Pretzel · 61-69, M
@Darci well I hope the hysteria passes in a few days

don't get me wrong - some people are dying - but it's not like THE PLAGUE
Darci ·
@Stereoguy Govt of course. Who else? It entails you staying at home and obeying the rules they put out there for everyones safety.

I'm thinking of freezing some extra bread.
Darkmare · 36-40, F
@CrazyMusicLover I could do that... I bought flour too just in case :P and if I am bored, I might bake some cookies.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@CrazyMusicLover milk can be frozen too, need to open up the container and pour out a bit before freezing to give the milk room to expand. Thaw out in refrigerator when ready to use
Pretzel · 61-69, M
where I live they like to say "the first 72 (hours) are on you" as I live in a hurricane prone area.

so I have emergency supplies for 3 days, including medications.

that's the extent of it
Pretzel · 61-69, M
@Stereoguy been there, done that, bought the t-shirt :)

First aid kits.
Powderflask · 31-35, M
@JimboSaturn agreed. I should have worded it better. The first aid kit isn't for a virus it's to avoid Drs offices if possible. As an example last month I mildly burned my wrist on the charcoal grill.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
ah I see.@Powderflask
Darkmare · 36-40, F
@Powderflask I totally agree with you. The reason I asked this question is because I want to reduce my trips to the store and hospitals. A lot of good answers here, things that I didn't think of. May not be relevant for Covid but could be in the future :)
plungesponge · 41-45, M
Cold medication, fever medication. I'm guessing that stuff is going to run out very fast

@Stereoguy I've even started taking immune booster supplements to try prevent the usual sickness. Unlike the US, Australia hasn't even started with it's cold season yet so the virus for us is only going to be more severe over the next few months. Gonna be a rough ride

Coffee, smokes, dvds, and pop ......:)
Darkmare · 36-40, F
@SW-User YES! Coffee :D I usually get a large packet of coffee beans, but I went to the store this morning, they only have small packet which only lasts for 3-4 days :( That's when I knew, this is serious shit.

Use your common sense!! If you don't possess any, ask someone who does.
That is all.
Thankyou. ✌

@Stereoguy Exactly! That's my concern too. Because of these people, I had to stock up too lol. Just didn't want to buy unnecessary stuff. Thought of getting some ideas from here. :)
