Why do women NEED to be sweet and kind in order to get assistance in life but men can act bold and aggressive?

I am having issues with my new car. I have brought it back to the dealership three times (which is inconvenient when you have to work) and the issue remains. Feeling a bit frustrated I asked the "manager" in the service dept. if I could speak with the general manager - service dept. and dealership are attached. I waited 20 minutes before both men arrived looking very stern and said "What exactly is YOUR problem?" I explained the issue (even though they KNEW what the issue was). They looked at each other and jointly agreed (w/o the conversation being directed my way) that the manufacturer should be notified. Meanwhile a gentleman next to me (who came in 30 minutes after I did) was able to leave immediately with a rental because his car was having an oil change.

This is not the first time things like this happen to me.

I explained this to my father and his response was ... "You get more bees with honey than you do with vinegar" WTF? Was there a time lapse back to 1962 that I am unaware of? My time and money is just as valuable as a man's.

Is this an American thing ... Is this a sexism thing?

It's depressing knowing that I have the rest of my life having to deal with this.

I think everyone needs to be assertive. Women & men. Not weak nor aggressive.
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@SW-User Some people think women being assertive IS aggressive and it's not just men; some women are opposed of women sticking up for themselves too. It sucks. Can't we as a society turn the page already? ❤️
Ontheroad · M
I have zero doubt that women are treated differently than men at places like auto dealerships. It's I imagine not just a thing in the U.S., but probably worldwide. Not excusable or right, it just is.

Short of addressing the sexism issue, this is how to deal with, or at least how I dealt with the issue:

I Googled the manufacturer's' customer service number and called it. It's always a toll free number and it takes a minute to get to the right person, but it takes care of the problem. I didn't need to be aggressive at all. Just stuck to my guns and wouldn't stop until I got to the right person. The result was a call from the dealership I was having a problem with. They had me bring in my vehicle, apologized for the prior crappy service, and told me they would have a loaner ready for me when I brought my vehicle in. When I got there I was met by the dealership manager and the service department manager, was whisked right through the drop off and loaner pick up process and three days later my truck was repaired and waiting for me. They threw in a free oil change as an apology and both the dealership and service manage gave me their direct contact numbers. No muss, no fuss.

You don't have to be aggressive, just refuse to take less than good service and when you don't get it, go straight to the manufacturer.

@Ontheroad Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. Your comment was filled with useful information that I am going to definitely use going forward. I am delighted everything worked out well for you. Let's hope I have a similar result 🤞
Yulianna · 22-25, F
🙄 that's just shit!
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@Yulianna It really is 😞 Thank you
Yulianna · 22-25, F
@dontbekoi at the risk of being flippant, i just want to buy the dealership and demote them both to painting tyres and sweeping forecourt...
Adogslife · 61-69, M
If you don’t like the service, you have two options - personality aside.

1) If “convenient”, service your car at another dealership and explain the problem you’re having.

2) Go public. Though I’m not a big fan, a Google review (that’s negative) will typically cause a reaction. If they fix the problem, and the way you feel you were dealt with, you can always agree to take the review down if the results are satisfactory.

Best of luck!
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@Adogslife Very good ideas - thank you! 😊
pdockal · 56-60, M
3 times for the same issue .... lemon law ... i got a new truck because of that
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@pdockal I was thinking the same thing. Glad to hear you got a new truck !
pdockal · 56-60, M
@dontbekoi
Took some doing but yes i did
Don't take NO for an answer
Contact cooperate if the dealership ship doesn't help
CestManan · 46-50, F
I can understand the frustration of a problem not being fixed even after two attempts.
Problem though -
Asking to speak with a manager or higher up immediately makes someone think, "Karen". I think a lot of people may not realize they are even acting like one.
That aside -

With car sales or ANYthing automotive related, there are damn near nothing but crooks in the industry. Everything from new sales to private party buyers and sellers, service departments etc.

I deal with the public and it doesn't matter if it is a man or a woman, I will go out of my way to help if they are polite. With customers perceived as rude, people try to "pass the buck" which is why they told you to contact the manufacturer.

When rude customers are given something for free, it is because the people running the business are just trying to get said customer out of their hair.
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@CestManan I think the term "Karen" is used to shame and shut women up - I am not a fan.
I work in a corporate environment where I am responsible for 17 employees. I work shoulder to shoulder with men and they have no problem with the way I conduct myself (I have been promoted three times). I think certain men are intimidated by my ability to purchase cars and homes on my own ... But their insecurity does not give them the right to rip me off. I will be respectful to people who treat me in kind but after three attempts to get a problem solved AND spending 34k for a car that is obviously a lemon is a bit much. I wrote this post this AM when I was feeling very low - I no longer feel this way. I have gotten some great advise that is empowering and I am going to go forward and conquer this problem. I have a feeling tomorrow will be a better day. Thank you for your response 😊

I had an ongoing issue with my Ford Explorer. Not until I contacted Ford Motor Co. and got ahold of a district manager for my area, did my issue finally get resolved. I was also given an additional 3 year and 30 thousand mile warranty for my problems.
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@TBone This is exactly what I am going to do. Thank you so much and I am happy everything worked out for you 🙂
TBone · M
Thanks! Good luck!
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
All I can think is it might have something to do with how you present yourself. My wife doesn't take crap from anyone and at the garage they don;t dare talk down to her because she'll tell them what's wrong and how to fix it. Plus she has her "teacher look", honed from 35 years of teaching 7th graders, which can scare anyone. LOL
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@ChipmunkErnie Don't take this the wrong way but I think I am in love with your wife LOL! 7th graders are NOT easy. All those hormones - Yikes! 😆
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@dontbekoi Yup -- 7th graders can definitely challenge your nerve. As as an art teacher she had to teach every single one of them, not just a small group.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@ChipmunkErnie
Plus she has her "teacher look", honed from 35 years of teaching 7th graders, which can scare anyone.

If someone can deal with those little b@stards for even five years, it is probably not someone to be messed with.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
I think both sexes get farther not being rude.
If you were not being rude, then they had absolutely no business treating you that way.
They should be professional either way, but human instinct is to protect self, if one comes at you, so that's why I say, for both sexes, better off not being rude.
Money talks louder than anything, is there another service station you could use?
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@Justmeraeagain I agree completely. I am going to call the manufacturer tomorrow to see if their is another dealership I can bring my car to. 😊
TexChik · F
There are laws in place to deal with this. However if it’s under warranty you can take it to any dealer to get it fixed , not just the one you bought it from . And if it’s in the shop while under warranty they must provide you with a loaner , free of charge.
TexChik · F
@dontbekoi in the US absolutely. Any dealership selling the same brand is an authorized dealer . I would report the dealership to the corporate headquarters. Is the car under warranty?
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@TexChik Yes. I actually purchased the extended warrantee.
TexChik · F
@dontbekoi Then go to a different dealership. The Vehicle's ID is in their system
Jackaloftheazuresand · 26-30, M
because there's no substance to your threats, at least in general. Of course you don't have to play sweet only, it's just less likely to blow up in your face, women figured out a long time ago that they could be deceptive instead.
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@Jackaloftheazuresand I did not threaten anyone and have failed to learn the fine art of deception. ☮️
Jackaloftheazuresand · 26-30, M
@dontbekoi Nonono. I mean that in women being smaller, whatever threats they could make which one would need for an aggressive approach are shrugged off. Ah if you had any sort of peer interaction you've learned it. Heck, sometimes just your sex is all you need because a woman will be trusted over a man when it comes to "he said she said" and you don't even have to be purposefully trying to deceive for it to work
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@Jackaloftheazuresand Oh, I see what you are saying. I agree there are times when this is SADLY the case. Navigating the waters of the sexes can be tricky because you have no idea who you are dealing with and what their experiences have been. I just think of everyone being equal but different ... and that's ok. Thank you for your explanation 😊
Teslin · M
Insist on another car until yours is fixed.
Same year, same model.
Until it is fixed, you will be putting miles on a car they can't turn over and make $$.
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@Teslin This has me thinking. Thank you. I needed to change my thought process and this might work.
Teslin · M
Good luck @dontbekoi
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@Teslin I so appreciate your support! 🙂
REMsleep · 41-45, F
I don't like to be prejudged but the otherday I was having a medical procedure that requires twighlight anesthesia to knock me out for 20 to 30 mins. The staff had trouble starting my IV and the Dr turned around and said, " you know technically we can do this without anesthesia". He said in some places they don't have anesthesia.
I truly felt that he offered this to me because he was busy and I am black. I don't think that he would have offered to do my procedure wide awake if I was perceived to be more gentle and sweet (which unfortunately is tied to race).

The point is that people have unconscious bias period. We actually all do a little bit.
Cars are " manly" " Men know more about cars so their opinions can be trusted"
That might not be strictly true but it is unconsciously taught to us so car sales people( mostly men) do subscribe to this.
Just as studies show that pretty aggreeable babies get held twice as much as " ugly" babies so do women have to turn on the charm to get better results at times.
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@REMsleep

FFS What is wrong with people? I am so sorry you have to deal with this too. It's sharing of experiences that allows us to feel that we belong to a bigger community outside of the body we had no choice to be born in. Thank you for making me feel that I am not alone ❤️
GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M
I never “expect “ them to offer a loaner car. When I make the service appointment I tell them I NEED a vehicle for the day. I don’t make the appointment without that agreed to
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@GJOFJ3 Good to know 👍🙂
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Not just an American thing, but something peculiar to car sales people and estate agents in my experience 😕 That was such a rude way to deal with your custom 😞
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@SunshineGirl I'm sorry you have to deal with this B/S too. It's really difficult to plaster a smile on your face, tone your voice down and express your grievances when you have life responsibilities to contend with too. Thank you for responding 🤗
braveheart21 · 61-69, M
Is the car new or a previously owned car
braveheart21 · 61-69, M
If its under a year contact the manufacturer as most have a clsuse in the warranty that if the vehicle is not of merchantable standard and fit for purpose they have a duty to replace it or refund the purchase price... Also contact the motoring press and complain about the quality of the vehicle and lack of care from your dealer... Make a public fuss and dont back down... @dontbekoi
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@braveheart21 Such good information ... not only for me, but for others who are reading this. Thank you 🙂
braveheart21 · 61-69, M
No problem... Use the press as they use us.... Name and shame your dealer and the motor company if you get no satisfaction.... Also use the law to protect your consumer rights to products that are fit for purpose.. @dontbekoi
assemblingaknob · 26-30, F
Yes I have experienced this first hand. Read one of my most recent posts about this. This is sexism.
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@assemblingaknob Sucks doesn't it? I keep going over the scenarios in my mind thinking it was my fault in some way? I have told friends and family to get their views and they are at a loss. I did find out that several of my neighbors had similar experiences from this dealership though. My plan is to call the manufacturer in the AM and state the facts. This seems to have worked for others 🤞

Thanks so much for your reply!

lol

It's just a "people" thing. You can write a negative review if they didn't do their job properly or mistreated you in some way.

Not just women ...common courtesy shouldn't be uncommon for anyone
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
I actually did get a new car using the Lemon Law in my state. I went right to the car company and I was taken care of.

Car dealerships are nasty AND incompetent. NEVER get work done there if you can avoid it.
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@uncalled4 I love hearing stories like this and I am really happy for you ! 👍
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@dontbekoi if you want to hear the story, DM me and grab a sandwich lol
SkeetSkeet · 100+, F
This is why when I need something done with my car I send a my stepdad or my brother. Not that I want go but because I know I will get treated differently. It's effed up that they try and make their money off of being sexist.

@nonsensiclesnail I could have one of my male co-workers come with me if I have to venture back into that garage. I am really hoping I can take it elsewhere. Good advise!

I am glad your mother got her job done ... I do worry about the elderly being taken advantage of by shady businesses. It must be so difficult for them, especially if they don't have any children or relatives to advocate for them. I hope they can come here and read all the great advise everyone has given. Thank you 💗
