Making friends as an adult.

I have to keep reminding myself to stop making jokes about my tramatic childhood. My new potential friend group grew up in stable homes where they were wanted as children.

The last time I made a joke about my childhood i swear you could hear a pin drop. It was those "The music at the party abruptly cuts out and everyone at the party's attention is on you kind of scenes". Then my female friend hugged me and said "I can not relate to that experience but I am so sorry you went through that."

Gentle reminder- making jokes about your tramatic childhood is a coping mechanism and isnt appropriate behavior for friendly get togethers.

True friends listen regardless how much your life experiences 'trigger' them

It's also on them, though. We have, sometimes, obscure boundaries in this world.

I have talked about my past here, but I never say a word in person or around others that are not in my close circle of friends.

I did this when I was a teenager. 😂 Not gonna lie, people thought I was weird, but I made some wonderfully weird friends too, and I like to think we had more fun!

Yeah. I get that. I usually make off the wall jokes. Everyone eventually gets bored with me quickly and ignores me though

At my age I have all the friends I need. Anything new is just an acquaintance 🤷‍♀️

I feel you. 🤗
How is someone supposed to respond to that though?

Laugh and seem callous ...or emotionally reset and sympathize ?

It's a catch 22 situation 🤷

@OogieBoogie I agree it can put others in an awkward position, but if dark humor is your thing and it's genuinly really funny, it puts people in a position where they'll laugh and then be shocked that they did, which to me is gold. 🤣
@SW-User Fair point.
Maybe it's a case of 'read the room' before you commit ?🤷

I think making jokes about a traumatic childhood is healthy. Like whenever I do something brilliant I say - see mother was wrong I'm not stupid. Cheers!

Kinda sucks for a social media post too.
