Who was your first foreign friend?

Only the snail mail was available long time ago, we had a way of contacting others through penpal.
My first penpal was a lovely Dutch girl -- Wilma, who was going to be a nurse.
We were both 15 years old.

She used to send me some of her photos when she helped out her uncle on his farm, many small farm animals she used to take care of was refreshing to me.

I sent her my photo taken in front of Olympic Stadium gate, I lived right next to it at that time.
She asked me whether that was my house..😁

The second one was a boy-- Diego from Brazil, who was really into David Bowie.

It became my youth memory that I used to enjoy and it seems so pure now compare to what we can do the same thing instantly.

When I was in 6th grade we needed to get a locker partner. There was a new Chinese boy in the school who no one wanted to be a locker partner with. I volunteered to. It turned out we became best friends and kept in touch for many, many years till I moved out of the area where I grew up.

@OverTheHill Good for you to be different from others.. and you have a good spirit in you..🤗
OverTheHill · 61-69, M
@Eyeinthesky Thank you, as you do as well. :)
When I was born, almost everyone was foreign. A person with one arm lost in the Crimean war was there to hold me at age 100. A person from the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies gave me a name, and so did an American.

@Roundandroundwego your parents were brave to try new world and made it. 🌸💚
Ducky · 31-35, F
Back on Yahoo! Answers I ended becoming pretty good friends with this British lady whom we were both regulars in a particular section on that site. We even video chatted once, but sadly, we ended up falling out of touch.
Eyeinthesky · 56-60, F
@Ducky Busy life and all... but you had a good first impression about British I bet.. good memory for you...😄🍀

Life has lost its essence now as things have become too shallow as people expect everything on the surface and show no interest in getting deeper. Snail mail days people exchanged information more constructively and so was telephones when we were charged in seconds and had to communicate quickly and rest by letter.

But now people spend time arguing with one another endlessly giving no time for the other to explain. Everyone wants to get to know everything and only react adversely after knowing..
Eyeinthesky · 56-60, F
@in10RjFox I fully agree with you..🤗

When I was playing travel ball in the summers (16U) we had a catcher that was Hispanic ( anchor baby ) . She was tough as a boot and was very sweet once she knew you . She had a great bat and a rocket arm and was good at moving the defense . I pitched so we spent a lot of time together . If she called time and ran out to tell me the batter annoyed her , I hit them with the next pitch . She once caught an entire 2day tournament because our other catchers had a stomach bug … and never missed a beat . It was hot and she endured and played very well . I still miss her . Her family moved and we never saw her again.

@TexChik You both sounds like tough and cool sporty girls... fun and exciting time!👏

When I was in grade 4, an Indian girl came to our school, her name was Pinky, she was sweet and shy and wasn’t actually allowed to a have a white friend but I guess she was rebellious too.
Eyeinthesky · 56-60, F
@SW-User Now its common to be friends with any culture background...its a good thing.🌸

@Eyeinthesky yes thankfully things have changed. ☺️

A guy from Greece who I still talk to to this day, even though the site we met in (sodahead) is long gone. We were both 14 (now 26).
Eyeinthesky · 56-60, F

When I was 10 a French girl called Edwige moved into our boarding school dorm. We had to move the beds around to fit an extra one in for her, but that was fine because we now had our own little corner of the room with three beds pushed together and we could talk quietly after lights out. We got on really well for two terms, but she never returned after the summer break. I think her father was on secondment to the British army and then got moved again. Girls often appeared and disappeared in our lives because of military postings.
Eyeinthesky · 56-60, F
@SunshineGirl you must had lots of fun at the boarding school. I know many couldn't stay for long term due to posting to other regions. Moving a lot has both good and bad advantages. 🌸🍀

there was a French foreign-exchange student at my high school who was also my temporary neighbor. he would sing a French song at me that had my name in it. he also encouraged me to remove my bikini top at the beach and couldn't understand why it was illegal. we kept in touch for a few years after he left.
Eyeinthesky · 56-60, F
@SW-User I don’t know when it was but French are more open and not shy about expressing fun loving nature. 😄
That song is special to you. 💚
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
early 1990's - a woman in canada. fast forward to today and I have no idea where she is or what she's up to. I'm presuming you mean a person actually in another country not just a person of different background you meet in normal day to day life?
Eyeinthesky · 56-60, F
@zonavar68 when I was young penpal is the only way to makes friends, whole different cultures and languages were fascinated at that time. It’s like looking at the map and imagining their lifestyles, I was beginning to learn English and curious about many things at 13-17 years old. 🍀

originnone · 61-69, M
I don't know if I ever had one really....Different nationalities, yes, but I don't know that I ever had a friend who came from another country themselves.
Eyeinthesky · 56-60, F
@originnone You can see many foreign friends here, including me..😄
originnone · 61-69, M
@Eyeinthesky Yeah, I guess I didn't think too hard. My home town didn't have any...no black people either. By high school, there were some folks who were rescued from South Vietnam, and I knew them but didn't really become friends.
nofreymc · 31-35, F
I spent a bit of my childhood in France so I think I was the first foreign friend for a few French people
Eyeinthesky · 56-60, F
@nofreymc That's great, I'm sure you still can speak French now... when young you can learn language so easily...
nofreymc · 31-35, F
@Eyeinthesky It's not perfect but I can definitely get by with it if I woke up in France
Eyeinthesky · 56-60, F
@nofreymc That is so handy...👏
Fluffybull · F
Yes, it was really exciting getting actual letters through the post! 👏👏♥️
Eyeinthesky · 56-60, F

At the beginning of second grade, in 1977, we got a girl from France, whose father got an engineering job at a local electronics company that my Grandfather worked at as well in the same department. My Grandfather invited her father and my new classmate's family and my family over for dinner one night when I told him she was in my class, he was a serious home gourmet at made bouef borgignon (French beef stew made with a Bordeaux red wine) with home made french bread. We all loved it, except my grandmother, who's a hick to begin with, my mother a simple taste farmgirl cornbilly from iowa, and my two older brothers, who both hate veggies. But regardless, most of us had a great time.
@Eyeinthesky Definitely, my Grandfather was a serious home gourmet, as was my Dad, and now myself, food is the common denominator in every culture around the world.
Eyeinthesky · 56-60, F
@NativePortlander1970 I think it is fun to share and learn about food each other...
@Eyeinthesky Most definitely
