Is It Wrong To Call Your Friends, Who Are Girls, Girlfriends?

It sounds weird, but for me, every now and then I would say, "a girlfriend of mine", and all that when I'm in a conversation.
Is there anything wrong with that? I'm just genuinely curious because I had gone to this group last night with this friend of mine, and she told me after about me saying that word all the time, and that I shouldn't say it so much and just say "Friends" instead.
I'm not meaning anything sexual, I just sometimes call them that sometimes.
Did I do anything wrong? My friend makes it sound like I did...
Extra note I forgot to mention: I call my good friends girlfriends, girls who I go out more often with.
No, that is a term heterosexual women have often used to describe their female friends ("I’m having lunch with my girlfriends today"). Context is generally the clue.

I find it amazing that you even had to ask this question. The cancel culture has everyone under 35 on edge. Just say what you feel and screw the busy bodies.

[c=002673]No, you are fine.
We just happen to live in an age where every word uttered is put under a magnifying glass. [/c]

My wife often refers to her female friends as girlfriends. She isn't worried about any confusion about her sexual preference and laughingly says that the lesbians in the world have a different name than girlfriend when referring to their love interest.

You did nothing wrong, they are your girlfriends, and you calling them girlfriends is correct. Your friend is making a big deal about nothing, dismiss what they said, and carry on.

I've heard women say that a lot. You'll notice though, that males don't call their guy friends "boyfriends."
Tananzia · 22-25, F
@sylvester true!
Dv8rs · 18-21, F
@sylvester Perhaps a bit of a double standard here, for girls, it's fine, and for guys it doesn't sound right. Funny how innocent things get all jumbled up like that.

I think the gender people have on edge.
Relax, you've done nothing wrong - with the possible exception of granting that girl from group that much power over you.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
No people do that all the time
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
I just call them friend's.
JohnOlinger · 41-45, M

Adogslife · 61-69, M
You’re going out with your girl friends/girlfriends. The “girls” are your boobs. I assume they always go with you.
plankter979 · 46-50, M
that's pretty normal among American ladies to call friends who are girls, girlfriends
Crazychick · 36-40, F
I've heard it used in that context before. It's better than calling girls "guys". That's just insane.
Morrowind · 26-30, M
No but if you’re talking about one girl and call her your girlfriend but be confusing
Just wait until your boyfriend refers to his buddies as boyfriends.
CassandraSissy · 22-25, T
I, sweetie, tend to call my fellow trans friends as 'my girls'....

Crazychick · 36-40, F
@Jimmy2016 It's weird, isn't it?
