Do you think it's wrong to boil lobster or Crabs alive for human consumption ?

Docdon23 · M
as a longtime vegan and lover of all living beings I think it is wrong to boil any animal to eat...and yes, I expect lots of harsh comments now...
Docdon23 · M
@Human1000 I have been vegan for 17 years and love it--my health has never been this good and I feel morally more comfortable. I have told many people on here that I am vegan.
Human1000 · M
@Docdon23 And a keen sense of irony!
@Docdon23 I salute you
BlueVeins · 22-25
Yes, obviously. It's wrong to kill sentient animals for food in the vast majority of cases, and it's even more wrong to do so in a way which probably causes them great pain. Mussels and oysters are a great ethical alternative to lobster and crab, since they're very eco-friendly and almost certainly have no conscious experience.
SW-User
Don’t they kill them first with a quick death by shoving a knife into their skulls? Before putting them into boiling water?
@SW-User not always and not everywhere, unfortunately
SW-User
@Elessar that's not true about the empty shell
wonkywinky · 51-55, M
@SW-User being invertebrates they dont have skulls
SW-User
If survival came down to you vs any other living creature would you think twice about right or wrong? Now, work back from there.
@SW-User he doesn't insist upon it. Mankind does it because oof his nature. God is not responsible for the behavior of Putin or Stalin or Hitler. We have free will and we will destroy the Earth of our own will
SW-User
@Nexus Who granted us free will, as you suggest? Did He not know the eventual outcome of His decision?
@SW-User yes. He din't grant anything. He just created the Cosmos. Humans will destroy itself of a physical existence. SOme will find a spiritual existence but not all. The one's who find immortality with exist on a new plane. Not a place but a plane of existence. That's my belief.
To me that is animal cruelty. And that's why I don't eat lobster or crabs.
@RobinPhoenix good for you
@Nexus Good for the animals... one more person for whom they don't have to die a horrible death.
@RobinPhoenix agreed

Yes. It was one evening of seeing (and then hearing) struggling lobsters being put in pots of boiling water, that led to my finally making a major change in what I choose to eat. I felt faint, seeing that.
Piper · 61-69, F
@Nexus I'd never chosen to eat a lobster before that, anyway. Not sure why that one night forced me to face something I'd always felt conflicted about, but it did.
@Piper you have become conscientious, which is good
Piper · 61-69, F
@Nexus I'd been very conscientious about wanting to help as opposed to harming animals, though, long before that one evening in 1985 or 6.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
I have frequently thought about the animals we eat. The Indigenous Americans have a little service for the animals, thanking them for giving themselves so we can live. I think of that sometimes, not just the lobsters or crabs, who feel pain, but may not know they are dying, but how about the cow that was slaughtered so I could have my steak or hamburger. Yes, it is an ethical conundrum.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Nexus Yes, it is, that is how I responded. The facts about the lobsters or crabs, if you put them in water and gradually raise the temperature, they allegedly, don't suffer as much, if at all. supposedly the gradual raising of temperature interferes with the way their bodies sense heat/pain. At times i thought about being a vegetarian, evolution has favored humans being omnivors, so being a strict vegetarian is really difficult, not just psychologically, but physically as well.
@samueltyler2 Possibly they don't suffer as much, but the possibility is that they do. Why Not kill them before boiling ? Seems more humane
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Nexus You still are killing them though. I took a course in invertebrate anatomy, once we studied the lobsters, they were put into an autoclave, they died virtually instantly from the heat and pressure. But, we still killed them.
Chattermanuk · 46-50, M
Yes. And thats coming from a meat eater.
@Chattermanuk Good on ya , meateater
scrood · 31-35
No -- the dominant life form consumes the lesser -- many people would be thrilled to have lobster meat or crab meat because they are dying of hunger

@Nexus Ok I will not answer any more loaded questions!!! Especially since you neglect to say WHY you think it is wrong
@scrood That's okay. Your opinion is a valid as the next. I never qualify my questions . I just accept what other's think and if they require a reponse , I respond
BigImo · 22-25, F
No they're delicious
BigImo · 22-25, F
@Nexus oooh yum. When is my date with the demons
@BigImo tonight
BigImo · 22-25, F
@Nexus can't wait. Do I have to wear anything

They die instantly, I have always heard, never having known the terror that most land animals in the food chain experience.
@ineedadrink of course , that's not true. They take a long time to die
Elessar · 26-30, M
@ineedadrink I've seen them getting cooked and rest assured I wouldn't define what I saw, or actually heard, "instantaneous"
MoonlightLullaby · 41-45, F
Yes. It's terrible to hear them screaming.🥺 I'm not saying not to eat them, but I don't get the reasoning behind the method. It's a heartless one.
Henal · 26-30, F
Yes. Personally I believe it’s wrong. It’s literally a form torture that nothing or nobody should be subjected too.
@Henal I totally agree
4meAndyou · F
NO! They go into the water head first so they die instantly. It's a lot more merciful than spraying bugs and watching them squirm around and die of poison, or the decapitation of chickens.
@4meAndyou Going head first into water never kills anything. They try to get out if there is a lid on the Pot. Whoever told you that is lieing to you
4meAndyou · F
@Nexus Go jump into the water yourself. I've COOKED more lobsters in my life than you will ever know, and if you freeze them before putting them in the pot they die without thrashing. Now STHU. DONE with you.
@4meAndyou In that case i must have died hundreds of times by jumping into swimming pools. Try list to what you just said
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
Yes. There has to be a more humane way to kill them
@DeluxedEdition I agree 100%
ElRengo · 70-79, M
There is no need to.
And cruel
@ElRengo I so agree with you
SW-User
@SW-User agreed
SW-User
@Nexus cruelty seems to be a human condition we all have to do our best to overcome. 😔
SW-User
Yes, seems cruel
smiler2012 · 56-60
{@tantra] yes it is really cruel boiling them but you would have too kill them first otherwise
@smiler2012 killing them first would be more humane
wonkywinky · 51-55, M
im against the capture of wildlife for food anyway when theres billions of farmed animals to eat,its just human greed.
I stopped eating lobster awhile ago, because that bothered me. I understand there are now places where they don’t prepare lobsters in that way.
@bijouxbroussard Good for you, I salute you
wonkywinky · 51-55, M
youre damn right it is
Human1000 · M
Yes. Obviously.
@Human1000 but it still happens
