Today I learned that

Canola oil is from the Rapeseed plant that is mass grown in Canada. The plant grows pretty yellow flowers and there are fields and fields of plants though out most of Canada. The plant is a member of the Mustard/cabbage family. CANOLA is acronym for CANadian Oil Low Acid

Lower in saturated fat than even olive oil and you can heat it to a higher temperature so more versatile in cooking. We grow loads of the stuff in the UK too.

@SunshineGirl olive oil isn't much good in higher temperatures really

Most farmers refer to the plant as Canola. When it was starting to become popular it was called Rapeseed or simply Rape. That had a lot of political implications so the name Canola was adopted. Yes there are massive amounts of it grown in Western Canada. When I was learning to fly the Canola was in full blossom and it was almost hard to look at the field from the air. Just a mass of bright yellow. Bees love it though so there is that.

@hippyjoe1955 they put those seeds in canary seed mixes. When I take the canary’s seed cup outside to blow the shells out of the tiny seeds fall onto the lawn. One spring I had a lot of them coming up and before the grass got high enough to mow they were blooming. Ended up pulling them out of the yard one-by-one.

@cherokeepatti yeah they are now herbicide resistant so pulling them out your only option.

I use it for cooking and baking the most because it usually has the most neutral flavour/scent. Despite that canola field stinks quite a lot if you are near it. I think it's one of the most frequently grown crops here as well.

The crop in New Zealand was always known as Rape....until marketing replaced it with the brand name CANOLA.

New Zealand also renamed the Chinese Gooseberry to Kiwifruit and Passion Fruit to Crinkle Berry.

I had no idea. I just always assumed it came from a canola plant
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Yes, but there seems to be a strong movement to rename the plant because "rapeseed" is offensive. Meanwhile, in one of the WALLANDER mystery books/TV series, a killing takes place in a burning rapeseed field in Sweden and the yellow of the filed in the TV version is stunning.

Interesting. In continental Europe, it is not known as Canola but, depending on the language, as Raps (German), colza (French/Italian/Spanish) just to mention a few languages. The name canola is unknown in continental Europe
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@Stephie Now that is interesting I thought that Canola was now used world wide. I did learn something today 🤣
Pfuzylogic · M
It is very affordable and I have a little leftover now but I am convinced that Olive Oil will be best as far as a healthy oil.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
And all this time, I had assumed it came from canola seeds! 😄

Thanks for the info!

Quite a lot of rapeseed is grown in England too
Degbeme · 70-79, M
It`s good stuff.
Canola is a genetically modified plant.
