Today I learned that

Canola oil is from the Rapeseed plant that is mass grown in Canada. The plant grows pretty yellow flowers and there are fields and fields of plants though out most of Canada. The plant is a member of the Mustard/cabbage family. CANOLA is acronym for CANadian Oil Low Acid

Most farmers refer to the plant as Canola. When it was starting to become popular it was called Rapeseed or simply Rape. That had a lot of political implications so the name Canola was adopted. Yes there are massive amounts of it grown in Western Canada. When I was learning to fly the Canola was in full blossom and it was almost hard to look at the field from the air. Just a mass of bright yellow. Bees love it though so there is that.

@hippyjoe1955 they put those seeds in canary seed mixes. When I take the canary’s seed cup outside to blow the shells out of the tiny seeds fall onto the lawn. One spring I had a lot of them coming up and before the grass got high enough to mow they were blooming. Ended up pulling them out of the yard one-by-one.

@cherokeepatti yeah they are now herbicide resistant so pulling them out your only option.
