legal drinking ages vary from country to country....is it a little extreme that it's 21 in the united states?

in canada it's 18/19 depending what province you live in. what's the legal age in your country?
18🇦🇺
Old enough to vote, old enough to drink
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout

You'd have to be sloshed to vote for some of the candidates they offer... 🙄
@Thinkerbell it’s weird that we don’t really get to choose ey!
We get a choice of 2 stooge party’s that have been selected for us ..
Yay the commonwealth.
How ppl can take power with 30% of the vote is a joke.
Every commonwealth country has a coalition government, because they’re not liked enough to take power by themself.
Your guy had to get in bed with jugmeet..

Our guy got in bed with the greenies.. 😑
In my state someone under 21 can drink with direct supervision of a parent or legal guardian. In addition, the age for getting a bartender's license is 18. Go figure...
@bijouxbroussard i know...it boggles the mind...can an 18 y/o purchase firearms in the states?
@beermeplease I believe long guns are 18 and handguns are 21. However, that doesn't prohibit someone under 18 from having a long gun since hunting is big in this state. There are variations in the law regarding adult supervision depending on if someone has passed a hunter safety class.

I passed that class when I was about 12, and actually bought a shotgun when I was 16. Laws have probably changed since then.

@bijouxbroussard A vestige of puritanism

21 But at 18 you can vote, go to war , buy real estate, etc. but having a beer is too much for the nanny state.
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
The argument was that if you were old enough to go to war and vote you should be old enough to drink. Not sure why they didn't just use puberty as the age. Hey, at age 13 you're willing to put all kinds of things in your mouth so it might as well be sterile.
@Tastyfrzz i'm kinda lol'ing
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
In Alberta it’s 18
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@beermeplease Ok I can see getting carded at 26 but 40? WTF?
@JimboSaturn i took ot as a compliment...now if i take public transit youngsters offer me a seat....lol im only 52 🤣
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@beermeplease So weird eh? I always looked young but now I'm old lol
SW-User
It’s 18 here but most are drinking by 15. I find it more strange that you can have sex at 16 but can’t watch porn until you’re 18
@SW-User yeah that is strange
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
@SW-User the porn sites ask if you are 18...you have to click yes! 🫢

When I lived in Ottawa on the border of Quebec we used to go over to the Quebec side where the age was 18 compared to 19. However they served anyone with lame fake ID or someone else's ID
GeniUs · 56-60, M
I bought some in the supermarket and was asked to take the hood down on my hoody for the ID check, I'm 58! You wouldn't ask The Grim Reaper to take his hood off would you?
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
I wonder if the reason in the U.S is due to drink driving deaths ?
Maybe more disproportionate deaths on the road caused by younger people who may have been drinking.....

Still makes no sense if you can legally buy firearms or join the army and train to kill people at 18
swirlie · 31-35, F
@LordShadowfire
To become an enlisted soldier during the time of the Vietnam war, one had to be at least 19 years of age. But as soon as the US government imposed the draft after it became apparent that the US was losing the war, the minimum age one could be drafted was 18. Of particular note, at the height of the Vietnam war, 60% of all US military forces were comprised of draftees, not enlisted soldiers!
@swirlie I'm aware of the history. I still say it's wrong. An 18-year-old doesn't know shit about war. But then again, if they only relied on adults who fully understood the horrors of war, they wouldn't have anyone fighting.
swirlie · 31-35, F
@LordShadowfire
Oh, I fully agree that sending an 18 year old to war is wrong, only because war is a fool's game anyway! The reason they don't recruit older, wiser adults into the army is because older adults know better than to say 'yes' in the first place!
it all came about because of 'madd'; they got the floor time and nobody could argue against them (is anyone really going to go after mothers in general? or stand 'for' drunk driving/) and they plowed through with legislation to withhold federal funding for infrastructure unless drinking ages were raised to 21 a good case study in laws that are driven by emotion and not facts, reason, or logic.

18 here but many youngsters still find ways around that
@SunshineGirl so at what age can i smoke a joint with my kid? 6... weed is by far more safe than alcohol. but i guess its not legal over there like it is here. but you get my point. right?
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@beermeplease Illegal at any age (although you can buy cannabis oil for pain relief). It sounds weird, but many young people will try drinking illegally with their friends anyway, so I guess there has to be a legal avenue for parents to introduce alcohol in a safe environment. Not for my family though.
@SunshineGirl when i was around 15 we would go out to a local restaurant. it was a pizza joint and we were regulars. my parents would allow me a couple of beers and the restaurant would serve them to me as long as i was discreet.
Legal drinking age used to vary from state to state. I always thought that if you are adult enough to serve in the military and risk your life for your country, you are adult enough to drink.
@BizSuitStacy i agree 100% that goes for voting too
Jonjdw · 46-50, M
I wonder if in America they go by seven years your body changes thing. Idk if they do. But 21 wold be the third seventh year
Nanori · F
Drinking in Iran is forbidden so that means you can buy drinks from anywhere without showing ID
smiler2012 · 56-60
@beermeplease i could be wrong bt in the united kingdo,m i thought is was eighteen but some pubs say it is twenty one and will ask for proof of age if there is any doubt
smiler2012 · 56-60
@SunshineGirl 🤔sorry that is not an excuse too question your honestly over your age because of your size where is common sense and discression
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@smiler2012 It's fine by me, I'm used to it. Usually young people behind the bar who are just trying to do their best.
smiler2012 · 56-60
@SunshineGirl 🤔i was going too say when you arer challenged by people who are younger than yourself make you feel small but i was rather insensitive there. but seriously suppose they are rather sort of jobsworths in a sense probably in fear if they serving somebody under age it will drop them in it but unfortunetly it does happen and people slip through the net and are served under age
cuteAlien · 22-25, F
it's 18 here. 21 has always seemed way harsh to me 😶
LUVELACE · T
23 years old here,if your a citizen and 25/26 ish if your a non national,£5.00 for a beer if a citizen and £10.00 if a non national all above too be accompanied with a valid driving licence or passport
@LUVELACE I'm curious, what country are you in?
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Extreme, yes -- but it used to be different in the US, with different ages in different states, until the Federal Government got involved and told states that any state with a drinking age under 21 would lose Federal highways funding.
18 but the way some of these imbeciles are behaving, it should've been 21!
When I was in college in Georgia, the drinking age there had been lowered to 18, so I was able to drink as technically a minor.

In 1986, long after I’d graduated, it went back to 21.
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard i think i went out once on my birthday to celebrate it with some malt liquor and at a party at Moorhead state downed a half a fifth of jim beam. First time I'd ever tasted the stuff. Was drinking it straight. Haven't been able to stand the taste of it since.
Here it's 18 🇮🇱
I mean, if you want to get technical, the adult brain doesn't fully develop until the age of 25, so 21 really isn't that ridiculous.
I remember when the US went from 18 to 21, September 1985, one month before my oldest brother turned 18. I'll never forget the massive tantrum he threw, our mother almost had to call the police on him he got so violent.
@NativePortlander1970 omg.... i don't know whether to laugh or give you guys a hug
@beermeplease You'd want to avoid him like the plague.
