Brach's Jelly Beans

cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I can’t have any foods with gluten in them so there is a lot of foods I miss. Some foods I can make a gluten-free version though so I can have GF bread, muffins, waffles etc. I miss cinnamon rolls, the big fluffy kind with white icing…Vegetable-Beef soup with Barley-I use to make that homemade and it was so good in winter. And gyros, loved those…even the meat has gluten in it. Bought some in Sam’s Club and then read that on the package. And Beef Chalupas Supreme. I might be able to make the bread from finely ground cornmeal (masa harina) and make them at home. I miss authentic Polish pickles that are no longer found in any stores around here. My brother-in-law got me started on them and they became a favorite. So many other foods. Not many restaurants serve a good variety of gluten-foods. This past couple of years I’ve gotten Thai foods, Chicken Tom Kai soup and a variety of curries and rice, the Pad Thai is made from rice noodles so I can have that.

Vesta Chow Mein. This was a noodle dish sold in dehydrated form in the UK. It was one of a 'meal in a box' range first sold around the late '60s. Inside the box were three sachets of dried ingredients, plus a little sachet of soy sauce. You put the contents of the meat and veg sauce (first sachet) in water, boiled it and cooked it for 5 minites, then in went the noodles (second sachet) and you simmered for 15 minutes. There was a third sachet with 'crispy noodles' which you fried; they puffed up and were delicious. These, together with the soy sauce, went on top when you served the meal.

First of all, they started to get more difficult to get hold of. Takeaways and frozen ready meals were displacing them. Then they changed the 'crispy noodles' to something different, which further diminished the appeal of the dish. Were they trying to justify discontinuing it? I can't find it actually in stock anywhere!

@supersnipe I used to love smokey bacon Walkers crisps but they discontinued them because muslim employees were refusing to make them. I'm not sure if they make them again now but I've refused to buy Walkers since that happened.
supersnipe · 61-69, M
@RodneyTrotter1

From Ocado. Looks like you can!
RodneyTrotter1 · 100+, M
@supersnipe I'm tempted!
DrWatson · 70-79, M
The foods that come to mind are sweets.

I miss Sunshine Hydrox cookies, which I thought were better than Oreos.

And the original Chunky candy bars. The ones today are quite different. And more recently, I came to love Fudge Brownie M&M's, but they have been discontinued.

If we move on to "real" food, I could give a long list of things my Italian grandmother used to make!
chasingMonday · 41-45, M
@DrWatson you’re the second person to mention Hydrox
DrWatson · 70-79, M

The chef's special at my local India restaurant, it was the nicest curry I've ever tasted and everyone loved it. He went to work at another restaurant miles away, other chefs have tried to copy it but none have come close.
BrandonWyatt36 · 36-40, M
We were just talking about those Square pizzas for school lunch back in the day the other day on Facebook... I told them you can buy those Totino's Hamburger pizzas at Walmart and stuff... Not EXACTLY the same thing... But close enough... I eat them sometimes... Matter fact I got me on to eat tomorrow when I wake up LOL
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Vitasia Tom Yum paste and Massaman paste. They were so great for curry.

Whole almond cream milk chocolate by Fin Carré. Probably the only chocolate that actually had peeled roasted almonds in it that I knew about. All the others have the peels. The chocolate itself was so creamy and delicious..

Now they probably discontinued my favorite rooibos tea. 😠 I guess I will have to visit some distant store to check if they still have it there and buy it all off.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
It was at a restaurant not far from me, they had two of the BEST foods I've ever had. Instead of dinner rolls , they served homemade cinnamon rolls before your dinner. They were AMAZING!!! ANd they had the best, most delicious chicken carbonara in this world.
They closed down after being open fifty years. I was so sad. 😧I miss it a lot.
chasingMonday · 41-45, M

Not exactly something I should eat, but it was so good.
DrWatson · 70-79, M

I know what you mean. One reason it was so good was that the secret ingredient was 'Mom'.
