It depends .. my sons and I sometimes split an order of calamari, Chinese dumplings, etc that I never get on my own
BlobbyMcBlobface · 56-60, MNew
@BrandNewMan Splitting can be a great idea, we sometimes have a sharing platter here for two which is enough for four people

DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Never ordered starter for myself. Only in a group setting was "starter/appetizer" necessary.

That's a starters purpose. It takes time to make dinners for groups of people. Especially if they should come out all at once.
BlobbyMcBlobface · 56-60, MNew
@DeWayfarer Yes but a huge starter won't digest in time for me to enjoy the main course and starters are huuuuuge nowadays
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@BlobbyMcBlobface the starter is supposed to be for the WHOLE GROUP. 😆

I stay home.. my hub likes the take out plates at the local Chinese restaurant tho i put his fave chicken and rice plus a salad and cake

I like the other chicken and potatoes and corn fritters and green beans
BlobbyMcBlobface · 56-60, MNew
@YoMomma I love Chinese food, absolutely delicious
YoMomma ·
@BlobbyMcBlobface i used to like the beef and broccoli now i like the peanut chicken

If we were out to dinner with a drinking crowd, (usually the ex's family), we might order appetizers with our drinks, so that we would not get too tipsy. Then we might order our food a half hour later.
BlobbyMcBlobface · 56-60, MNew
@4meAndyou Something to soak the drinks up is always good
Usually spoils the main course.
I'll have a light starter at the very most.

No filling up on complimentary breadsticks either, then cutting out before the server returns.🤭
Often I’ll order an appetiser which is often bread, for everyone on the table to share.
BlobbyMcBlobface · 56-60, MNew
@Gingerbreadspice I like bread with balsamic vinegar but it's rarely on a menu here
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
I don't usually, sometimes my daughter and I will just get appetizers as lunch with some fruit or something.
BlobbyMcBlobface · 56-60, MNew
@Justmeraeagain Excellent choice
Adogslife · 61-69, M
We live by the ocean, so the seafood is pretty good. We usually have a couple starters from the following: calamari, shrimp cocktail, crab cakes or chowder.
BlobbyMcBlobface · 56-60, MNew
@Adogslife You're so lucky, seafood is the best!
sree251 · 41-45, M

We live by the ocean, so the seafood is pretty good.

Living by the ocean doesn't mean shit. All the best catch get shipped to the cities. I found that out while hunting for a home on the east coast.
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
Some places apply pressure to order a 'starter' esp if it's couple having a romantic outing, almost like it's 'code' for 'if you don't we will ruin your day'.
BlobbyMcBlobface · 56-60, MNew
@zonavar68 That would mean the exit door fir me, same as a compulsory service charge
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
@BlobbyMcBlobface Haven't encountered a service charge yet, but we also don't really do tipping here as Australian's get paid real wages so tipping isn't a think or required. One thing that does crop up is card payment surcharges which are often automatically added even it paying cash. Gotta watch out for those.
BlobbyMcBlobface · 56-60, MNew
@zonavar68 I only tip if the service is above and beyond the usual standard and always question the service charge, we can hardly serve ourselves in a pub or restaurant after all.
I was once banned from an Indian restaurant in London because I didn't tip, he chased us out of the door yelling obscenities at us, free entertainment for anyone who was there 🤣
tobynshorty · 51-55, F
I love the free bread and butter but I haven’t been out to eat for a while now
BlobbyMcBlobface · 56-60, MNew
@tobynshorty Can't beat bread and butter with fish & chips or an English breakfast
tobynshorty · 51-55, F
@BlobbyMcBlobface I misread but yes it’s the best
Ramrod · 46-50, M
Sometimes yes, sometimes no,all depends on how hungry we are and what kind of starters are on the menu. :)
BlobbyMcBlobface · 56-60, MNew
@Ramrod Yes they can be tempting sometimes
At an indian place, I once ordered some of their special bread. Turned out it was a Naan Starter🤣😂
Prisoner1972 · 51-55, M
My wife and I split a starter. But before that we get drinks. She gets a mixed drink. I get scotch.
BlobbyMcBlobface · 56-60, MNew
@Prisoner1972 Good idea
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
At the Chinese Restaurant, the starters are the only thing that interest me.
BlobbyMcBlobface · 56-60, MNew
@Thevy29 Same with me when I eat Thai food

No starter, no dessert. Just my meal
BlobbyMcBlobface · 56-60, MNew
@Jenny1234 Same here
ToLivePeacefully · 31-35, M
No Starters.
carpediem · 61-69, M
Most of the time, the starter IS the meal.
BlobbyMcBlobface · 56-60, MNew
@carpediem I always eat less during summer, a combination of less appetite and being busier so less snacking
carpediem · 61-69, M
@BlobbyMcBlobface My GF is a Pilates instructor and REALLY into healthy living. She’s molding me into a healthy person whether I like it or not
