What has been your worst experience dining out?

BamPow · 51-55, M
In the early 90’s, we went to a Ponderosa steakhouse for dinner one night. When my meal was brought to the table, I moved the kale garnish to the side with my fork. When I did that, it opened up and hundreds of these little green bugs came spilling out and dashing all over my plate like it was “Starship Troopers”. The manager tried to get me to accept a gift card instead of a refund. I made so much of a racket that he just ended up handing me cash from the register just to get me out.
BamPow · 51-55, M
@Levenrack It was over 30 years ago, but his excuse/explanation was that it’s a common problem in the industry. I worked in restaurants when I was in high school that washed and refrigerated it. They must have just been pulling it out of the box without doing anything to it.
Levenrack · 46-50, M
@BamPow Okay. Yeah I worked at the Sizzler, around that same time. We had kale, but it was used as buffet garnish. It was still washed and iced in the mornings, before opening.
Levenrack · 46-50, M
@BamPow Also everytime I say the sizzler. That line Jimmy Pop says in that Bloodhound Gang song. Three Point One Four. It reminds me of working there.

I took a girlfriend to a fancy restaurant, as a special treat. We sat down and looked at the menu and both realized it was FAR more expensive that we had even imagined. I forget if we ordered a salad to share and then left, or just left! It was not the night out I had hoped for.
it was actually at a denny's in either oregon or washington . got seated and then it took over 30 minutes for server (young man) to even take just our drink order. then at least another 40 minutes to take our food order. yest it was busy but he was terrible. when we politely complained he said "well that sure sucks" he totally messed up our food orders and that's when we asked for the manager...i think she took a few dollars off the bill,,,,but that kid should not have been a server
@beermeplease When I was security at Caesars Palace the average cocktail floor server took home anywhere from $2K to $2.5K per night, I often escorted them to their cars, most of them could rival Victoria Secret models in their skimpy uniforms.
@beermeplease They most likely fired him that night, IHOP prides itself on quick service.
@NativePortlander1970 i have a feeling that manager did

On a date with a friends sister....and after 45 minutes the food didn't come, while everyone else got theirs, the waiter said 5 more minutes, so 10 minutes later we walked out and pizza and ice cream which turned out to be fun....

any chinese restaurant that has a lavish bar is probably bad for the food. last one i tried was PF Chang's. it was disgusting and there were bugs in the napa cabbage. the other one i tried all the food was exactly the same color brown no matter what dish you got lol. ive forgotten the name of it.

eta- the worst dining experience though was with my ex husband. im vegetarian so we were at a place that only had one vegetable soup dish as a vegetarian option. we got our food. he got this gorgeous plate piled high with food and i got a little bowl of vegetable soup. he then proceeded to take his bread and dunk it in my soup sopping up all the liquid. (without asking) i mean he didnt just dunk it real quick he let it sit there till all the liquid was gone. worst dining experience. lol. i still think about that everytime i go out to eat.
@Penny Gagalicious and a puke fest. I hate those types of establishments

Valle's Steakhouse in Braintree, (now out of business). The hostess deliberately seated us at a table whose waitress had not shown up for work, so that WE would complain about not having a waitress.

We sat there for more than 30 minutes waiting for someone to wait on us, before another waitress had pity and told us that OUR waitress had not shown up for work. Naturally, the restaurant being the dysfunctional mess that it WAS, no one else would wait on us. When we walked out the door, un-fed, I blasted the hostess for doing that to us. When I got home I wrote the manager a blistering letter.

I must say that was one restaurant I was happy to see go out of business.
Ended up at a deli place that only took cash, not even a debit card, and tried to feed 4 on ~ $55 in NYC (several yrs ago) .. 3 or us split a large deli sandwich combo, one had a hot dog, and I went without a drink
We got asked to leave, after we ordered and had drinks, because, although I stated when I sat down, because my friend hadnt told them I had a nut allergy when he booked the table, the chef refused to serve cook for me.
fun4us2b · M
@V00doo That's nuts!

nut allergy

You never hear of women in porn with such a condition 🤔

glass in my food 🙈 I'm British though so naturally felt extremely guilty pointing it out to the waitstaff and only did so as i was worried about it happening to someone else
Fortunately it was before the meal, but still.
I saw smudged fingerprints on my plate…ink, dirt ? I couldn’t tell. I asked the waitress, who looked unimpressed, picked up the cloth napkin, blew or spit on it, and wiped off the fingerprints.

Then she asked us (me and my brother, who was horrified) what we wanted to order.
"Nothing," I replied, getting up and leaving. My brother followed.

I was in Colombo Sri Lanka on a business trip and stayed at the finest hotel in Colombo. Sri Lanka is an island south of India and use to be called 'Ceylon'.

My business clients and I went out for dinner at a local Indian restaurant because all restaurants in Colombo of course, are Indian!

I ordered something like 'butter chicken' which was basically a chicken and vegetable dish from what I remember, though admittedly not necessarily an accurate recollection. When the food arrived at our table, the color of the entire dish of food was rusty red and I was told it was curry sauce poured all over the entire thing... which should have been my first clue that something was amiss.

After tasting it, I immediately realized it was extremely spicy, so much so that my lips were burning. I complained to the waitress and she said that all the food is served extra spicy because the restaurant doesn't have refrigeration and using hot spice is an old Indian tradition of masking the smell of meat that had gone bad from not being kept refrigerated.

Needless to say, my mouth burned for two more days, I never touched another bite of my meal and in fact, I went back to my hotel room and ate 3 packets of cheese and crackers I'd taken off the airplane meal tray on my way over there.

Word to the wise, never-never-never eat Indian food that is spicy, no matter what part of the world that restaurant is located.

@swirlie Oh. Well that's just lovely.
Levenrack · 46-50, M
At a Perkins, I got chili with all the fixings: cheese, raw onions, and sour cream. I added all of it. I took a bite and almost broke a tooth. At first, I thought there were stones in it, but the beans were rock hard.
Levenrack · 46-50, M
@NativePortlander1970 Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was it. It was scrapings on the sides of the kettle, or it sat under a heat lamp forever. Unfortunately, it kept me from ordering chili or soup from a restaurant. Well except for Zuppa Toscana from Olive Garden. Wild horses couldn't drag me away from that. 😉
@Levenrack The kind of thing that gets restaurants closed down if served to an undercover health department inspector. I once got a bread outlet shut down for selling expired products.
Levenrack · 46-50, M
@NativePortlander1970 Yes. Yes indeed.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
When the waitress carelessly tossed my plate of fries on the table and they fell all over me
DarthInvader · 36-40, M
@swirlie You know, for someone who calls my approach gauche, you sure give me a lot of attention… which is odd, considering I wasn’t even talking to you. It would be simpler to just admit you’re curious rather than trying this school-girl jab to get my attention. 😉
swirlie · 31-35
@DarthInvader
But you ARE gauche! ...and I've always had your attention anyway, so no jabbing required on my end!
DarthInvader · 36-40, M
@swirlie Then you must have a thing for gauche men, because instead of avoiding me, you’re awkwardly pursuing me😂
a long, long, long time ago I was travelling cross country and stopped at a pizza hut to get something. went in, sat down, ordered. kinda zoned out and wasn't thinking about it much... then the manager came out and got all pissy at me, asking me if I was ever going to bother ordering anything, like I was somehow just soaking up their ac or something. I said I had once and asked if I needed to again. she shut tf up fast and pretty much hid from me till I left.

Plumbing/toilets were backed up really bad and you could smell it soon as you entered the building.

That was a feature at the clubs we went for punk rock

Getting the bill.
@BobbyMcBobface Had that feeling the night I got the $$$ steakhouse check for 11 people on my son's college graduation night. Helped when I realized the tip was already added .. and how nice an evening it turned out to be for all of us.

I found a kinky red hear in my hash browns once.. another time my chicken sandwich bun tasted like cigarette ash 😖 never went back there again
@YoMomma That's horrible, hope you sent a letter of complaint to express the error of their ways
YoMomma ·
@phoenixrising no i complained to the waitress about the hair and she said it was probably the cook’s but from the way she talked about him i thought she had a crush on him 😅

The sandwich was from a drive through i was just horrified and never went back there

Finding a Bandaid in my Olive Garden Salad.
@exexec Oh, yikes ! 🤢
Levenrack · 46-50, M
@exexec I'm guessing you did not order your salad, with extra dressing!!!

Get it. Bandaid. Dressing. Wound dressing. Ahh I'll see myself out. 😒
exexec · 70-79, C
@Levenrack No, but I wish I had thought of that at the time.
I still remember from my childhood when the drunk waitress dumped my food in my lap

Food poisoning. Spending the night in the bathroom puking and shitting while sweat poured out of every orifice on my body.
Levenrack · 46-50, M
@Musicman Oh, gnarly!
@Musicman My grandmother's cooking, two weeks after my 25th birthday in 1995, I had been out looking for work that day, she put food away in the fridge too late past the time limit, or something, I didn't know until the next day she had done that, it hit me in the middle of the night. Xmas day 2010, my mother and I went to a Perkin's after a long drive, my older brother had upper spine surgery, had a French dip, the beef must have gotten below holding temp for too long, over half the night puking.
