How can this be a Non-Dairy Creamer if it contains milk?

Starcrossed · 41-45, F
Why does the Glenview Farms non-dairy creamer say contains milk?
Non-Dairy Foods and Allergen Labeling Laws

If the manufacturer uses the term “nondairy” on a creamer that contains sodium caseinate, it must include a parenthetical term such as “a milk derivative” after the listing of sodium caseinate in the ingredient list. (Reference: 21 CFR 101.4(d)).Jan 16, 2020

@Starcrossed Also - it should be Glenview "Labs" no?
helenS · 36-40, F
@fun4us2b Almost all processed food we eat or drink (such as packed soup) is a product of the chemical sector, especially when it tastes "natural".
Adrift · 61-69, F
I am still trying to figure out how something can say plant based and still contain eggs and milk.
Maturebate · 70-79, M
@Adrift probably soy as one ingredient
@Adrift simple: the base isn't the full product.
thisguy20 · 41-45, M
Its right up there with the "vegan pork chop" I heard someone try to order in a BBQ restaurant. For the record there was no such item on the menu

edited to fix typo
@thisguy20 why would anyone want to eat any porch? 😲
thisguy20 · 41-45, M
@NerdyPotato that was a typo: should have said "pork"
Kenworth4954 · 56-60, M
@NerdyPotato cuz wood is vegan 🤷
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I just looked it up. They call it non-dairy because although it is made from milk, it is a milk derivative which contains no lactose.

That still seems bizarre to me, but there it is!
helenS · 36-40, F
@DrWatson Thank you!!
What about butter and cheese? Are they milk derivatives too? And, therefore, non-dairy?
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@helenS I certainly think of them as dairy.

I think a milk derivative is a chemical extracted from milk. From what I found in my brief and very non thorough research, such a product can call itself non-dairy but must be labeled as containing milk.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
I dunno -- unless they were milking almonds again.
That's because milk doesn't really mean milk. 😂
dominateofyou · 61-69, M
non dairy it came from a moose moose mike
WolfGirlwh0r3 · 36-40, T
powdered milk is still milk

@Nasty Why would anyone do that when you lack basic respect???
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
It will have had the lactose removed, therefore apparently can be described as "non-dairy".

I think the more relevant question is how can a product be described as "cream" if it does not contain milk? 🤔
The term non-dairy may be used if a product contains no more than 0.5% dairy, but allergy info must declare every possible molecule. So this contains very little milk, but still some.
The casein isn't going to harm people with allergies, and it's not much of a source of nutrients. So it's not promising to be milky.
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
Maybe to warn people who have allergies or intolerance? Maybe it was made with machines that also process milk?
fun4us2b · M
What? Be sure to shake well. otherwise who knows what will happen!
justlooking2023 · 56-60, M
This is not my beautiful house, this is not my beautiful wife.
Patty81 · 41-45, C
Probably because it contains a ton of weird gums and stabilizers
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
The D in that kosher certification literally stands for dairy.
Convivial · 26-30, F
That's a rather interesting question
Lol, I asked this question a few years back...
Like fat free half & half. Cream is milk fat.🤷‍♂️
Bearsfan67 · 56-60, M
Contains milk but requires no refrigeration.
Maybe it is all in the way you shake it. 🤔
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
They missed something!!
Shaveit · 61-69, M

basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M

BittersweetPotato · 31-35, F
@basilfawlty89 REPORTED 🥔😡
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
I gotta fridge full of non-dairy milk since my naturopath told me to lose the dairy for a while
That is puzzling.
