Expired or "Best By" date? If it is "best by" date then no reason not to eat it. Actually I've eaten cans with expiry dates a year old and more. As long as there is not signs of the can bulging, leaking, etc., and it doesn't smell or look off, then you are good to go.

Expiration dates on canned goods are only a suggestion.
There has to be some way of knowing how old a product is…but it doesn't mean its bad.

Tins are usually ok way after their dates.
Royrogers · 61-69, M
@MrsRachelEvans some tins from the artic exhibitions were still good after a few years
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
I've never seen a can with an expiry date only best before. Canned goods in good condition cans stored in dry conditions last almost for ever.
exexec · 61-69, C
Yes. Especially after cleaning out my aunt's pantry after she died. I found items that had expiration dates from five years ago.

I use expiration dates as a guide. I go more by what it looks and smell like when I open up the package/can/etc.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
Not to a serious degree. I use them well within their expiry dates even though not necessarily in order.
The food won't be inedible from midnight of the date, but will deteriorate very slowly and that four months won't hurt. Eat that can-full, and re-arrange your pantry so the oldest are now at the front. (Something I must do, though I doubt any will be past their dates!)
("expiration"? Odd word. It's not your invention; I have seen it on one or two on-line purchasing forms.)

saragoodtimes · F

Lilymoon · F
I wouldn't eat it lol
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
@Lilymoon it's just sloppy joe sauce
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
On a can I wouldn't really care lol.
Piper · 61-69, F
Yes. Most times though, I wouldn't hesitate to use a canned food product unless it was WAY past the expiration or "best by" date. The exception would be something that contains meat, like my dog or cat's food, or anything someone other than me was going to eat.
Iwillwait · M
No worries. Eat it.
PetalsOfLilac · F
It might be okay.. but i usually stick to no later than 1 month past the best by date.
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
Is it meat or vegetable?
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
@Muthafukajones just sauce
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
@smileylovesgaming if it’s a vegetable sauce I think it would be ok to use. I wouldn’t cook for others with expired food but I would for myself.

People eat food out of dumpsters.

@swirlie
I've been fortunate that I have never been in that situation but who knows what the future holds?
Responsible dumpster-diners should always read the expiry date on discarded good items before chowing down a festive meal.

5 months? Not a problem. It's still good.
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
@SW-User Yesterday, I had some doughnuts that were pretty good for being three days past their best before date.
