The only thing I haven’t made is grits.
I’m not ‘murican 😉
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@Domking I've eaten grits, but I'm not sure we even have the hominy here.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@JimboSaturn yes we do have hominy in some stores. No frills and Asian supermarkets. It’s canned
@ImpeccablyImperfect all Americans don’t eat grits… some states you can’t find them.. but they are missing a real treat.

Yes I can cook - I draw inspiration from my Chinese heritage and French cuisine 🐼🥢🙂
Oster1 · M
@Dlrannie That fusion of cooking, is very inspirational and delicious.

My Mother was French and taught me, from a very early age.

I've been a lifelong scratch cook and still know nothing.

Yet, I'm always complimented, on what I serve. 😊🌷
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
Plenty of people have eaten my cooking and gone on to lead normal lives.
@Thevy29 I have that plaque on my wall.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@Thevy29 yay they survived!
Yes, I can cook. Your list is rather southern US oriented. No, I've never made "biscuits" but I've made popovers. I've cooked chicken multiple ways, but never fried a whole one. I honestly don't know what a "a pot roast with all the veggies" is, but I've roasted various cuts of beef & pork. My potatoes are au gratin, not scalloped; sorry. Never a jello salad, I'm proud to say. I've cooked plenty of vegetables, some of them green. Is that the same as "a pot of greens?" How are dumplings different from biscuits? I've cooked "slow" oatmeal, but never grits.

Chocolate cake with chocolate icing from scratch (24 oz of dark chocolate total) from my mom's recipe is one of my specialties. Apple pies from scratch are another of my specialties - I use a mix of braeburn & cortland. So is chili from scratch. So is home made lasagne with sausage & artichoke hearts. We do a home made deep dish pizza in a cast iron pan. I've grilled, roasted, and pan fried various vegetables; pan fried asparagus is one of my specialties.

I've never made fudge, but I know how to temper real chocolate, and I've made chocolate covered fresh blueberries and chocolate covered fresh raspberries - they need to be eaten within about 12 hours of making. I've made chocolate souffle. I've made ice cream from scratch with a hand crank mixer while adding rock salt to the ice bath. I've lived in a couple houses without dishwashers, but not in decades.

I've also grilled swordfish, baked salmon, and pan fried sole and bluefish and tuna and bass. I've cooked scallops and mussels and oyster stew. I've cooked lobster and shrimp in various ways. I've cooked both omelettes and frittatas.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@ElwoodBlues yes you’re right about it bring southern us oriented. I changed cornbread to bread. I don’t really know what exactly is meant by greens. Most Canadians have never had grits
redredred · M
I’ve done all those things. I’ve been cooking and baking since childhood. When my first wife got cancer I took over all the cooking for our family of six. One of the jobs I had in college was as a baker in a bakery.

A Christmas dinner with a dozen dishes and pies is not a problem. I’m a firm believer that if you can’t cook you might one day find you can’t eat.

My "old school" mother taught me to cook before leaving for college. I love cooking from scratch. One reason I bought this house is the lavish kitchen.
cuddles1266 · 70-79, M
I have done 18 of these. There are several in the list that I would not make but that is just my personal preference.
I do enjoy cooking and baking
I'm the one who cooks in my home and also since I was taught by my grandmother how to cook and bake since I was a teen, I've done all of these pretty much all my life except for the following:

22. Cooked a whole turkey- my brother likes celebrating Thanksgiving even if we live in Europe now (we're not Americans but we lived in the US for many years and there's always so much to be thankful for too ☺️) He's in charge of making it since we celebrate it at his place.

37. Cooked grits - I've never made them, I've never had grits.☺️

@OldMan70 the supermarket sells them already boiled
dubkebab · 56-60, M
I have not made pudding from scratch. Can honestly say I've nailed everything else on the list.
I am no slouch when it comes to kitchen chores.Made 40 orders of chicken pot pie today at the food bank.Yes,with store bought crust, sigh. It was delish. Hobos were smacking their lips all over town.

I don't imagine anyone frying a whole chicken...maybe that is a 2 part question.
Nothing on this list is super challenging, particularly with a bit of practice.
JohnnyNoir · 56-60, M
I've done quite a few from that list. I live in the South so a lot of them are staples here
I've done every single one of them

And I have no dishwasher lol

I don't buy any pre-prepared meals.
I cook all meals from fresh ingredients.
I aim for a combination of looks good, smells good, tastes good and is good for you (nutritionally well balanced at every meal).
We don't have a dishwasher and the only electric tool is a blender.
I love cooking; it's an act of creativity and love.
I also love the eating.
Jeephikelove · 51-55, F
I can, I think I’m a pretty good cook too.
The only things I haven’t done is make homemade jam/jelly or cooked grits.

I have cooked a lasagna entirely from scratch on a barbecue while camping. Impressed the shit out of everyone! ☺️
dubkebab · 56-60, M
@Jeephikelove Like a boss! Did you use no-boil noodles? those are great .
Grandma showed me how to add a layer of alfredo sauce-yowzah.
Jam is easy, but pretty time/berry intensive.I get about 7 little jars from an entire flat of strawberries.
Jeephikelove · 51-55, F
@dubkebab I didn’t, although that would have been a good idea. I might try jam one day. Wow, that does seem expensive and time consuming.
Nanoose · 61-69, M
I'm a great cook and I have successfully made 4 of the things on the list - #3 - #10 - #23 and #33. Our son must have inherited his cooking skills from me - he is a professional baking chief. Cheers!

i said yes to 29 Qs maybe cuz its my first time living myself but also bc im indian so ive never heard of many dishes on the list, kinda intimidating lol
anoderod55 · 61-69, M
Quite a list . Love that you do your own thing . Homemade 🌹✨❤️ Don't like dishwashers . I do that myself too 🦋
I can cook.
As for 40, grew up that way and removed one from my house.

38 was my first recipe, as a teen.
Oster1 · M
Honestly, yes, all of them and many more! True story. 😊🌺
Domking · 61-69, M
40 yes, I do (but most houses don't have one in this part of globe, it's not common out here)

Except 22 i.e. Whole turkey, I have cooked almost all the items, or something similar to that. Something more difficult at some questions
Why isn't rib-eye included ? I make a mean Cajun ribs
SW-User
im not American so a few of those i have never eaten so would never cook or bake or prepare
but i cook almost daily from scratch
and refuse to have a dishwasher
ive never owned own and never will
SW-User
I’m not that great. I need practice cooking but I do know how to cook. That being said, I don’t think I’m a great cook. I do make some homemade things like gravy, lol
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I have never
Cooked grits
Made pudding
Made jello salad
Fried okra or squash

I basically cook most things from scratch most of the time.
Yes to all except a pot of greens, pudding from scratch, and how do you fry a whole chicken?
@Mamapolo2016 bathtub filled with oil? 🤔
@MrBlueGuy Sitting on a dozen bunsen burners?

I was a assistant chef and was going to be head chef at a former employer. So yeah I fancy myself a somewhat of a good cook

Ohh.. TLDR.. I've done quite a few of them, I can handle myself in the kitchen. I do like to bake on occasion and my breakfast spread is tight!

I have done 90% of all these cooking aspects and have neve lived without a dishwasher.

robb65 · 56-60, M
There's a short list of things I've cooked but if I get the urge to do something I'll figure it out. I have baked bread a few times and made cookies... I must not be too bad at it, my mom seems to enjoy my fresh baked bread. Beyond that I've cooked wild game, it's been a few years but I'm sure I still can. During a power failure I once made stew in a cast iron pot on the wood heater and let it cook all day.

Yes 🙌. Love to cook 👨‍🍳
Everything except 35, at least once. I’ve never had a dishwasher since I left home.
I do cook and know how. A lot of that food is not in my general diet as I’m a vegetarian, that is lactose intolerant and has Celiacs 💀 I only haven’t prepared food for guests because I don’t invite people over (I don’t like guests).
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
I am not a baker, but I can cook a dinner or lunch from scratch and know how to follow a recipe. I just dont see the value in making cookies, cakes or pies. But know my way around pastry sheets and pancake mix of course.😷

I cook, but haven't made half that stuff. I haven't made chicken or egg salad. Never baked bread or apple pie. I have made beer bread once. The beer was the yeast. I currently have no dishwasher.
