Florida in an Insurance Crisis

I have been paying 4800 per year for my homeowners with large deductibles. I received my renewal for 9899 per year. I received a Citizens' quote for 5640 today. I can pay that all in one lump sum. Or lower my coverage. Pretty upset over this.

Its a rip off, of course.. However, not unexpected. Floods, storm damage, that the global warming that doesnt exist. And of course in America you can end up in court sued by your neighbour for whistling on a Tuesday.. Someones got to keep those lawyers from being homeless.😷

@whowasthatmaskedman nope you should not...😆
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@samueltyler2 I agree. Florida is sort of the worst case scenario for rising seas and storms..😷
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@whowasthatmaskedman we went Fr m a homeowner's policy of about $2k a year for our conf, to under $100 for our renters or insurance.

Florida has high insurance because of hurricanes knocking off roofs, no? In California, outside of the woodsy areas, insurance is pretty cheap. But earthquake damage is not covered.

@graphitemostly illegals down here. i don't know how they are getting these fancy cars either
graphite · 61-69, M
@akindheart I donated a car and nearly two years later, received a notice that it had been illegally parked somewhere. Apparently who had it never registered it so they sent the notice to the last legal owner. Makes me wonder who it was donated to.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@graphite they didn't want to pay for insurance or to register it i guess

I got tired of carrying homeowners and dropped it. Crazy storms do come through north Texas but my deductable was high. Its cheaper to pay for a new roof every 5-8 years than premiums. I own my place so I'm not having to protect a mortgage company.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@whowasthatmaskedman here is what the carriers do. they set up what are called PUP companies. so there is one for Florida. Florida shows a loss of course so they ask for rate increases. it is not always factored into the whole profit of the company. but when you have zero storms for a LONG Time, they are making big money. I am not with the state insurance and that is not good
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman Insurance is like betting. The policy holder is betting it will be needed above deductables. The insurance company is betting on keeping the premium. The insurance companies have actuaries to do the math.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@akindheart Yes... Thats good old capitalism for you.....Sadly I dont have a solution.. I suppose the state could set up its owe not for profit insurance business to provide cover. But thats not exactly the American way..😷

A friend of mine just got socked with mandatory flood insurance coverage, which brings the insurance for each of his properties up to about $9000 a year. He is sick about it because he owns four homes.

I called my brother who owns two condos there, and he says they have ALWAYS paid that much since they bought the properties about 10 years ago. It is included in the condo price.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@4meAndyou I bought flood insurance too. I have a jewelry floater too. With a condo, you don't own the outside of the condo. you own from the inside walls in. so what you are talking about is the insurance covering the structure. he needs an HO6 policy for his contents and the walls. I adjusted property for years.

when i first came to Florida, i paid 387 per year but i worked for an insurance company. After Andrew it went to 1100+ then up and up.

With the increase in severity of storms, the r sevin ocean levels, Florida probably has had bad experiences already, and the weather insurance companies are trying to protect themselves.

Those who argue against climate change, this is nothing compared to the future unless a major effort occurs to hold back or reverse the release of climate changing gases.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
Yeah, Florida housing is no fun at all.

Imma live in a van.
Pretzel · 61-69, M
were you down there where the hurricane came in last year?
around fort myers?

I'm surprised they still insure in florida (I live there too)
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Pretzel I am on the other side. The west coast has been hit many times. are you on the east or west coast?
Slade · 56-60, M
😵‍💫
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Slade you mean 20 Haitians who are raising chickens across the street..
Slade · 56-60, M
@akindheart I am taking a brief retirement now since I know I'll have to work forever
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Slade oh no...i am hoping i get some CAT work later on.
Is that DeSantis? Or just inflation?
akindheart · 61-69, F
@TryingtoLava It is the insurance companies. What happened is the risk is too great with all the hurricanes. the carriers want the car insurance but not the property. we had carriers pulling out like crazy
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
They like doubled it??
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Quimliqer yes. and wanted 40% up front. then charged me a fee every quarter to pay that way.
