So much depends upon where you live, what lifestyle you want, and how long you live.

I live in a medium to low-cost area of the U.S., and planned for a comfortable lifestyle.

I planned for a minimum $50k per year for 25 years, which, if you do the math, tells you I'll need $1.25 million.

I've been retired for a while, and so far so good. Oh, I have no mortgage and am paying rent off the proceeds of the house I sold, which was paid off.
Ontheroad · M
@AmericanAvenger I retired at 62.
Justice4All · 36-40, M
@Ontheroad How do you account for inflation? The official numbers say 3% in 2023, but it feels more like 10%.
Ontheroad · M
@Justice4All My income streams get annual inflation increases, so while I planned for $50k, it has been going up each year.
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
I am retired, and have no plans to un-retire. We are technically millionaires, but that sounds strange since we're basically middle-class homeowners.
Probably around $1 million invested in income generating accounts to provide a yearly income is enough to retire comfortably.
AmericanAvenger · 56-60, M
Pay off a house so you dont have a mortgage or rent and 1 million will last if managed correctly with social security
BobbyMoeven · 51-55, M
More than i got ..

Seriously , if the trends of cost of living follow these patterns , i may have to push my retirement 10 years forward ...

It's tough news to swallow ... Because the ship is at the edge of this adventure where i can hear the sirens of shuffle board and pinochle calling ...

I saw a guy whom said to retire early he needed $3 million... with inflation, I'm assuming it's over $5 million to retire early now.
Iwillwait · M
@sstronaut I agree.
jehova · 31-35, M
1 Million id put it in 5 percent 6 month bonds make 50k twice a year and retire
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M

I`m retired and it still isn`t enough.
jehova · 31-35, M
Given inflation when i retire at 65 which is unlikely. Given 2.5 percent inflation per year on average. Im 35 in august so. Given a minimum wage of 9$ now that would be 30 years from now the equivalent of 19$ an hour in 2054. When id be eligible to retire. Therefore
Never
thepreposterouspanda · 36-40, M
more than I will ever have honestly
SW-User

@SW-User at least 2 mill for someone 18-21
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
It depends greatly on the lifestyle you want to live. If you live a simple life then you’ll need a lot less than someone who wants to travel monthly.
With food and fuel prices how they be heading?

A modest Billion Canadian funny money dollars.
Zaphod42 · 46-50, M
Probably more than the $32 I have on me, but less than the GDP of Denmark 🤷‍♂️
UndercoverBard · 31-35, M

empanadas · 31-35, M
50 million with the way USD is falling
UndercoverBard · 31-35, M
@empanadas it’s hard to gage how much inflation will go up in the coming decades
empanadas · 31-35, M
@UndercoverBard bro for real...I would love to invest in more gold coins but I don't want to get robbed. The USD is being attacked on all sides
@empanadas including inside, as the solution to get rid of the debt was use inflation to make the dollar cheater and easier to pay back, and then reverse inflation.

BUT they have never actually done the paying back and they're just increasing the debt and saying we need double down (again).
Hanginginthere · 31-35, M
who knows anymore..
