Is it acceptable to hang knickers and bras (underwear) to dry outside?

With the weather getting warmer now I like to dry my clothes on the line outside in the garden so I dont need to use the tumble dryer. I also think clothes feel softer on my skin when they have been dried outside.

Last week i hung out a darks wash which included vests, t shirts, trousers, skirts and underwear etc. The underwear included a few plain bras and some knickers mainly briefs hipsters and boyshorts. My neighbour chatted to me over the fence and never mentioned the laundry.

Today i had a white and light wash which was predominantly underwear and vest tops. One the line there were 3 or 4 nude or white bras and quite a few pairs of knickers maybe 7 or 8. There happened to be 4 thongs which were not lace or racy thongs. They were a mix of white, nude and pale pink.

My neighbour walked outside and proceded it was inappropriate for me to be hanging my underwear on the washing line which her husband and sons would see. I asked her why its an issue we all wear knickers or pants and she commented saying its disrespetful and innapropriate especially as half the knickers are provocative little thongs. Not that i should have to but I explained to her theyre hardly sexy they are just plain seamless thongs which I have worn more recently as ive been wearing linen and white trosers with the weather being nice and didnt want VPL (visible knicker line).

I said are the bras an issue too as ive seen her hang the odd bra out before to which she said no and the other knickers are still unacceptable but she can tolerate it but thongs are a step too far.

Am I wrong for telling her its no big deal and she should mind her own business or do other people think this is inappropriate too? For the record most my knickers are more coverage i.e briefs, hipsters, boyshorts etc but this time the fact quite a few were thongs she seemed to have an issue. She said she has wanted to say something for a while as my other knickers offended her too but this was the final straw.

My mother used to hang her large white nylon knickers around the centre of the line. So they were not visable to the neighbours. When her younger sister came to stay she hung her assorted bright lacy bikinis on the line. Mum saw and flew into a rage and ran out and removed them. She said she didnt want the neighbours to think they were hers, and she was that kind of woman.

When i was a child the norm was to hang laundry outside on a line to dry in the sun.

i do it sooooooo therefore it’s fine

We never had a dryer, so everything was hung outside. Some people still prefer sun-dried vs dryer dried clothes.

Just hang them anywhere they can dry.

I put my undies and socks on the line outside to dry in sun. I don't have a clothes dryer machine.

My wife always hangs her knickers on the washing line can't see the problem myself.

We can all see it hung up at the store so why not on your washing line.

It's not like you are parading around outside wearing just your underwear

I always hang out whatever I can in nice weather. I smells so fresh and clean. So yes, tell her to mind her own business.

Unless there are reasons not to e.g. pollen allergies best to dry washing outside. I tend to use an airer for smaller clothes but that was due to not enough space on the washing line. As far as neighbours it honestly is none of their business. There are far worse things I've had to put up with over the years e.g. neighbours smoking illegal drugs so said laundry ends up having to be rewashed!
I guess if she is sitting in the window facing them all day long it might offend her.
I doubt there is a law about it, but the real problem though is that someone might steal them. Especially if you hang them overnight.
Maybe you can find a place to hang them that isn't so visible to her? Make sure they can't be seen from the street either.

She probably wears old-fashioned bloomers, hasn’t got any tolerance for modern underwear.

She has the problem
It's just laundry
Nick1 · 61-69, M
You should be able to dry your laundry outside. There is nothing inappropriate about anything. They are clothes everyone wears.

Of course it's fine to hang them outside ... tell your neighbours not to look if it offends them
Ontheroad · M
You are not wrong... hang what you want and she can go Karen someone else.

I wouldn't put my bras and panties on a line outside.

We all know women wear knickers and bras so not bothered if I see them on a washing line. Some are sexier than others but the same applies.
could someone give me the short version about what this post is about..if i had to comment on just the title i'd say yes
@beermeplease Neighbour A is jealous that neighbour B has nice underwear so complains about having to look at them all day long.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Of course you are not wrong, and it is hypocritical as I'm sure she would not have made the same comment about mens underwear.

If her husband and sons are that sensitive (or have uncontrollable libidos) they should be locked away. Drying outside is great for your clothes and the environment and that is the only consideration here.

She’s the one with problems

Bra and knickers are sold in shops and supermarkets !
Where is the problem?

You have the right to hang out your clothes
It’s none of her business
NeddyKelly · M
Be, very careful of snow droppers - is an old Australian slang term for a person who steals clothing, particularly women's underwear, from clotheslines
Zeusdelight · 61-69, M
We don't have a dryer so always do it. For our own sense of privacy we usually use the inner lines with larger items on the outer lines.
PHlover19701 · 56-60, M
Its completely normal to hang clothes out to dry, including intimates. Its your neighbors issue withing themselves for being that prudish and petty.
ArtieKat · M
Just ignore her!
I use a rotary line and hide anything like that in the centre... if they're still visible by then - why are you walking through my clean laundr???
