Why did women in the 50s always dressed like they were going to prom?

TexChik · F
Being well dressed in public was part of personal dignity and responsibility,

@ImpeccablyImperfect Imagine a school teacher from then walking into a high school today . They would be in shock at the complete moral decay of the country.

@TexChik and making a good first impression.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@TexChik good grief they sure would.

Any contemporary style of dress seems odd when taken out of time and context.

And even the men wore shirts and ties

they’d dress to impress

I don't recall they did. Although I didn't live in an upper crust area where I lived it was mostly factory and low level management economy where I was familiar with.

@SteelHands look at every sporting event from that era - all guys wore suits and ladies dresses. Both wore hats

@Slade People were mindful of any public appearance where (back then) a rare camera lens could save the moment for poisterity. People would clip pictures from newspapers and save them in scrapbooks. Especially for something like that where it was considered an awful disgrace to be seen in pubic looking disheveled or poorly dressed.

Maybe they didn't allowed themselves to be filmed on other times, as opposed to today when everyone themselves is sharing their personal moments.
Women and men both dressed more formally. I remember my mother wore hats and gloves. Pop wore suits everywhere. One thing that’s annoying is that women go on about how nicely men used to dress. They forget, women did, too.

@RogueLoner Their parents went through the Great Depression when they did good to have one decent outfit to wear to school. Wearing ragged clothing or too casual clothing or scuffed shoes etc reminded them of poverty and people were quick to judge. One of my high school teachers hated seeing cut off shorts or even blue jeans where we’d take the thread out of the hems and fringe the bottoms because it reminded her of that time. Some even do judge by looking at shoes etc today to sum someone up quickly.
