Why did women in the 50s always dressed like they were going to prom?

I don't recall they did. Although I didn't live in an upper crust area where I lived it was mostly factory and low level management economy where I was familiar with.

@SteelHands look at every sporting event from that era - all guys wore suits and ladies dresses. Both wore hats

@Slade People were mindful of any public appearance where (back then) a rare camera lens could save the moment for poisterity. People would clip pictures from newspapers and save them in scrapbooks. Especially for something like that where it was considered an awful disgrace to be seen in pubic looking disheveled or poorly dressed.
