The world of work

This week my daughter will do five days work experience arranged for year 10 students through the school. She is going to work in quite a big hotel within walking distance of our home. Her programme is designed to give her a taste of every aspect of hotel work (new managers do exactly the same) and is as follows:

Mon: General duties in kitchen
Tues: Housekeeping (servicing rooms, etc)
Weds: Working on reception and dealing with guests' enquiries
Thurs: Serving in the restaurant
Fri: Working with a chef in the kitchen

Her uniform is ironed, her hair is washed. She has been unusually quiet today, but a determined glint in her eye suggests to me that she will be putting in 110% effort over the next five days 😊

I WISH HER BEST OF LUCK! 😍😍😍 I'm VERY proud of her myself to be honest and I know she will be an awesome worker and a total star to the restaurant! 💫💫💫 I hope she does not get too tired that way she can have a little fun when she comes home! 🥳🥳🥳 Because I was special needs in school they let me do my work experince in the actual school working with the dinner ladies so for my week of work experience I was actual cooking the food in the school! 😂😂😂 This was the year 2000 and a year later I got a small part time job as a preschool helper because I LOVE children and I stayed a preschool helper for four years until 2005 when I got my current job (for 20 years) as a receptionist in a small hospital! 😁😁😁

@MommyLucy That was fantastic work experience Lucy . . and it obviously worked! 🙂

She needs to do small work placements for her vocational qualification. She will be exhausted by the end of the week - hospitality is very hard work - but this is exactly what she wants to do and it will be great for her!

@SunshineGirl Awwwww! 💖💖💖 I agree sooooo much that working in the hotel as work experience will be great for her! 😍😍😍 She's such a star! 💫💫💫 I know she will be tired bless her but I still hope she has enough energy to recharge her batteries with a little fun when she comes home! 😘😘😘 I am super proud of her too! 😁😁😁 Please wish her all the *BEST OF LUCK* in the world as I will too! ❤‍🔥❤‍🔥❤‍🔥
That's great for experience, I was at a kids nursery over a couple days a few months ago and enjoyed it.

I hope they let her use the hotel pool and hot tub!

Yet at one hotel I stayed at, if I recall, I saw a sign saying these things were for guests only, and not staff.

Maybe she can sneak breakfast from the complementary breakfast buffet. Or smuggle out bagels and bananas for the walk home.

@SunshineGirl I hope she doesn't get too tired! 😭😭😭 She needs to work hard but It is also important to have time to recharge after work! 😘😘😘

@JoyfulSilence Sadly I doubt work staff can use the fun activities in the hotel unless under special exceptions! 😘😘😘 But hopefully she can unwind at home I hope! 😇😇😇 I always find having fun after work recharges me for the next working day so I hope she has a little energy to recharge with something she enjoys back at home! 😘😘😘

@SunshineGirl 🤔yes this is work experience for her and give her an insight into the world of employment . but i think she should be paid for this too and there is insentive there rather than the thought of giving you time for gratis
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@smiler2012 She is doing a vocational course at school and needs work experience to count towards her qualification. If she does well this week there will probably be paid work available during the summer holidays, but the main thing is to build up experience in catering/hospitality.
smiler2012 · 61-69
@SunshineGirl yesc i can understand what you say and i get that it is just the idea of her working for nothing there is no insentive

@SunshineGirl I just sent you a PM! 😘😘😘 I know she will be awesome and make us all proud! 😍😍😍

Good luck to her. If she's all excited about it, it's a good sign she's going to be taking her professional life seriously.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Northwest She is likely to be doing this for real in a year's time. She's very switched on and keen to learn 😊

It will be interesting getting her reaction... And suggestions about what they're doing wrong🤣

My hardest workers are the high school students
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@MarineBob What they lack in experience they make up for with enthusiasm and energy 🙂
