What do you think about the name 'Nymphadora?' Would you give your daughter that name?

Longpatrol · 31-35, M
She'd marry an older man and die early leaving my ass with her half werewolf kid.
Justice4All · 36-40, M
@Longpatrol 😂 Wait.... is that what happens to the character on HP or did you just make that up?
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@Justice4All HP 😂
AndysAttic · 56-60, M
Well. My Son 'Napoleon Epstein Smith Attic' discussed your post with my daughter 'Chlamydia' and we though this was a superb name.
Fairydust · F
She’d get called Nymph 👀
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@ninalanyon Not so fun if she's bullied with that label though
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Queendragonfly In the English speaking world in particular someone will find a way to twist almost any name into something they find amusing. Sometimes everyone including the owner of the name finds it amusing, sometimes it's affectionate, sometimes it's done with evil intent.

Nymphadora would obviously attract the wrong sort of attention but it's quite difficult to find names that are completely immune to this sort of thing if the bully is really determined.

And even names that for years were just dull things that no one could do anything with suddenly become targets when they get used in a popular film or become connected with some unpleasant event. For instance Isis is the name of an Egyptian goddess and also the name for the Thames where it runs through Oxford, it was occasionally used as a female name. And then it was all ruined by Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham (ISIS).

See https://www.mamanatural.com/baby-names/girls/isis/, for instance.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@ninalanyon Isis is a beautiful name. If you give it to a baby girl now, hopefully any negative connotations will be forgotten by the time she grows up.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
I think that is the name of a Harry Potter character. Probably not a great rabbit hole to dive into . .
NerdySoph · 26-30, F
Just Dora. Cute, like dora the explorer!
Justice4All · 36-40, M
@NerdySoph Yes Dora is a cute name.
Really? They're going to call her Nympho...
A sex fiend in a nice hat?
InHeaven · F
Hell no. She is gonna be either a nymph or dora dora or even worse “Dora the Nymph” Poor thing
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Is that a real name?
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@LordShadowfire I googled that but I mean if anybody actually named their kid with it or if it's just something from mythology.
@CrazyMusicLover Yeah, I'm guessing it had fallen out of English usage until it was revived in the Harry Potter books.
@ElwoodBlues That and the fact that today's kids know what a nymphomaniac is, thanks to the internet. Poor kid would go home crying every single day of her life.
Never. Few names are bully-proof, but that one’s not even trying. Imagine the first time she comes home from school asking, "What’s a ‘nymphomaniac’ ?”
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
Unless I hate her, no.
lumberjackslam · 41-45, M
Nymphodora the sex explora
I know what it means, but I wouldn't saddle a child with that name and send her to public school.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@LordShadowfire You think that the inmates would be kinder at a private school?
@ninalanyon No, you're right. They'd be worse.
