I didn't realize that was that common of a thing, I had one any time my parents or sister wasn't home until I was around 14, and then for about a year after that I could be home by myself for shorter periods of time but if it was going to be more than about 2 hours I'd still have to have one. I only know of one other friend who was in the same boat with that, most of my friends could stay home by themselves by 10/11.

Im sure my parents would have a sitter if it was just me at home. Normally she relies on my younger siblings to tell on me, as needed. And that ends the fun that day.

You also have to obey the babysitter, the babysitter has the same authority as the parents

As an older gentleman and parent, I can relate to your parents and for teenagers is is often better for someone to be a babysitter for them who is younger than the parents are. Both teen sons and daughters can relate to such a person but knowing if they overstep the mark their babysiiter will still be strict but still fair. Young people need to know their boundaries and though seldom admit it, actually like such a structure.

Like others said, the need for a "sitter" can vary among teens and parental approaches. They probably feel more "at ease" knowing someone is there watching over you, so to speak. Especially if they travel for long periods of time. Sounds like you and Sarah have a good relationship, and it does not bother you a such. She's probably like another parent.
