My parents prefer I call them by their real names, is that weird?

I was discussing it with a friend earlier who said his mom is the same way. My parents actually prefer that I call them by their first names and I have since I was growing up. They said using mom and dad didn't make sense to them because they don't just call me daughter.

I personally would also want my children (if I ever have any) to call me by my first name. I don't perceive it as disrespectful to call their parents by their first names.

Our parents gave us first name for a reason, be it because it is tradition or because it is the law. Why use substitutes?

Things evolve with time and so do names. You barely hear a child nowadays being called Aglaea or Amadeus. You are more likely going to find a girl named Soutwest or a boy Norheast.

@MissyChrissy It seems that Europe is more or less an exception with traditional names compared to the US.

I think its weird. Its a sign of respect as a daughter to adress them as Mommy or Daddy.
I even say yes Sir in my language when Daddy is mad at me.

There are some families were adult children who call their parents by first names. Apparently once grown up they feel it’s more fitting.

I never called my parents by their real names. I had / have adult friends that do. I don’t think it’s weird.

At least from my personal experience, yes. This is weird. I normally call my mom ma or ama. My dad I call apa and both my parents prefer this.

@WendyLopez43 well it does sound a little odd not calling your parents mam and dad and by there christian names . it is more formal term of address used widely than referring too them as your parents
MissyChrissy · 18-21, F
@smiler2012 Totally agree to you, Sir.

My children called me dad growing up but most of their friends used my first name. I was never fully on board with being Mr. O. Sounded too much like my father.

I tried to encourage my son to do it but he seemed to feel uneasy with it.

That does not make sense at all. I don't think that's right, but I'm not them.

As soon as I finished reading your post. Pearl Jam's song called Daughter popped into my head. 🤗

I could not remember when I called them mum or dad - both deceased
LaurenRae · 22-25, F
to me, it’s kinda weird. but every family is different.
WendyLopez43 · 26-30, F
@LaurenRae It comes off weird to outsiders, I've gotten so used to it that I sometimes forget how it sounds to others lol. I've gotten a pass from them to call them by their names though.
Strongtea · 22-25, M
I see the logic, but I would find it a little bit strange.

It's weird !!!!!
I didn't even call my friends parents by their first names
I’d say it’s a little weird.
WendyLopez43 · 26-30, F
@OlderSometimesWiser Yeah, it works better for them though.
Each has their own ways. Maybe they could start calling you daughter.

Michael Jackson’s parents always had him address them by their first names too.
