I do not know if you have kids yet but if not, let me tell you - fighting the school system, as a parent, can become a part-time job.
There was a time when people were discouraged to have kids. I remember in school we would be shown these movies (not documentaries) where some young parents had these horrible lives after getting pregnant.
Don’t get me started on the school system

@Punches agree with you! In American schools they removed Gym - then continued to complain about child obesity rising.
Took away school dances-these kids don’t even know how to interact with each other.

Inflation and less hope for the future as it is. Plus it’s harder to own a home for younger couples or find affordable rentals
Nimbus · M
@cherokeepatti That's true Patti but how did they cope during the Great Depression?
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Nimbus some didn’t survive but even then there were more people… a lot more living on small family farms or acreages where they could raise food or hunt or catch fish and trap rabbits, pick wild berries, nuts and greens. A lot of the green spaces where people are living are gone plus the population has expanded greatly

Its not a question of fertility. Women are simply choosing to have fewer or no babies.
Feminism has given women the choice and the choice is "no, thanks".

People are just waking up and realising the certainties in life they were told were facts don't really exist.
No such thing as a job for life.
Can't afford to buy your own home.
Mistrust in anything economic given the state of earnings; pensions; living expenses etc.
Endless politicizing of who has the right to decide what a woman can't and shouldn't do with her own body.....

The reason for that is primarily cultural. Small farms and small farmers who had families of 12 children or more are becoming quite rare. Having children to work the farm? Not happening. There has, in fact, been an exodus from rural areas to large urban areas where there are more jobs, and where housing is more expensive, and there are fewer rooms in the family apartment.
The more money government spends, and the more expensive things become, the greater likelihood that both partners in any marriage will need to have full time jobs...and then there is no one to watch the children but strangers at day care. Married people have to think very seriously about how many children they can afford, and whether or not they will have time to raise them properly.
Our cultural withdrawal from religion is also a factor. Churches used to teach that family was everything...and if you had a lot of children you were blessed. Today, young people of child bearing years are no longer interested in what churches have to say...or at best regard it with cynicism.
This means that divorce has become an acceptable cultural option. In the past, a divorced woman was a matter of scandal and whispers. Today, young people marry in haste knowing that they can escape quickly and easily.
No young woman in her right mind wants to get married, have children, and then find herself abandoned by a player who entered into the marriage thinking that if he wasn't happy he could walk out and get a divorce. Women, especially, hesitate to throw the dice in that way. Being a single Mom is no joke.
Culturally, abortion has become an acceptable option for young women who care nothing for religion or family. Abortions used to be rare. Statistics show that over 900,000 babies were aborted in just ONE year. I believe it was 2019. I could be wrong. But I did look up those stats.
People who have lazy, lush lifestyles have become increasingly self centered and selfish, and they are not willing to make the sacrifices that their great grandparents might have made to bring their own children into the world.
I said that the decrease in population was PRIMARILY cultural, but it is also linked to toxins in the environment. Pollution in the everglades, for example, has caused wildlife to become sterile.
More and more young people who WANT children have been drinking poisoned water and eating poisoned food, and not by choice. This makes them, eventually, infertile.
Until God, and morality re-enter our world, this pathetic corrupted degradation of a once proud ethos will continue.

The life style for the American isn't about having multiple children and building a huge family? That ended when you no longer needed cheap labor, some lived some died. Moving forward into history agriculture has moved to automated John Deere tractors and everyone wanting at some point to live in the big city, enjoying life or being tied down to a 12 hour a day Job. Either way they have no time or financial resources for having children. Certain religions in America almost insist on a large family such as the LDS, the Catholics have abandoned it
Large families in America now has turned to the poor that rely on federal assistance to take care of the children they have

How do we in the US compare to our European look-alikes? It seems like Europeans were ahead of us on this.
In both places it seems like women joining the workforce moved our social orders from family centered to individual centered, and with that the cost of family doubled. Two autos instead on one, eating out rather than eating at home, more and better convenient appliances, etc. And once on that track a pullback is difficult.

For those more inclined to understand issues like what a crashing birthrate means to the future of the U.S.....and less inclined to be politically radicalized racists.............this is a serious issue and it why the government does not and has not cared all that much about illegal immigration since the Reagun years. If the U.S. birthrate does not increase......we will end up like China is today. A country of zero workers and zero population between babies and 70 year olds.
Immigrants......especially Latino immigrants have larger families............high birth rates. This birthrate offsets the decreasing birthrate of Americans.....to keep the overall population of youth vs older people at an even rate in the U.S. This ensures a future military.....a future workforce........a constant flow of working people to pay into taxes for the country.....continued funding of Social Security and Medicare.
Republicans...especially racists trumpers think immigrants is the end of society...........because of short sighted stupidity. In reality immigration is the solution to the low birthrate in America.

Improve the living standards and people will find the time and the money to build families.
They are more aware of how an upbringing in poverty can sabotage a person's life and future, and the future of their descendants. No one wants to be just a slave machine for the rich 1 /2 percentile.

@anythingoes477 so planned parenthood wasn’t getting a big bag of federal money.. ?
until SCOTUS pushed it back onto the states?
This is the only reason repubs care about abortions.. it’s the campaign donations from PP to stalwart dem politicians every election cycle
and that’s why the dems care about abortions. They used to get a big bag of free money for their re-election campaigns .. now the states have to find that money…
Nobody cares about the baby killin

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Planned Parenthood got Medicaid reimbursements and some funding from Health and Human Services.
The argument you make can be reversed pretty easily. All we have to do it substitute the NRA for PP.. No one who is getting campaign "donations" from the NRA to give favorable laws to the NRA gives a shit about baby killing either. The #1 death over ALL other causes combined of juveniles in the U.S. is from firearms. Check that out if you want...........but that a fact. So naturally all Republicans care about is if we protect the NRA......which then shovels cash into Republican pockets.
It works both ways. One party supports the choice of women to decide about their bodies..and family choices.....the other party cares about "donations" from an organization that supports the killing of kids another way.

Besides things people keep saying cost of living and inflation.
I am not surprised by this but only one person mentioned our autonomy getting taken away.
A lot of men are vocal about how they don't respect or value women which is why you see a mass of women not dating, like the 4B movement in S. Korea. People love to claim that women "in the old days" were better off but there's a good reason why there's a lot horror stories from housewives not being treated right back then, and still do this day. We seen what it did to ya'll then and we said no thanks.(Also the rise of "passport bros", incels, alpha men, and men who want women to be submissive. Sexism and misogyny is still a thing and there's a lot of pick me women out here)
The fact that everyone is implying that it's a woman's job to have babies is pathetic and shows no one learned nothing from this. I don't care if the birth rate is "at an all time low" it's not my problem, if humans go extinct then they just go extinct

Like car tires, the failure rate among the various brands of condoms out there is at an all time low. To prove my point I ask, how often do you see a car stranded on the side of the road anymore with a flat tire? Hardly ever, almost never.
How often does anyone blame the failure of condoms on the 8 kids they have loitering around the house anymore? Never! I don't even know anyone with more than one kid, which proves that condoms today are as reliable as car tires which is why Americans are not having more babies.

Regardless of the reason, immigration to the USA is what fills that void. The same thing is happening in Canada and in central Europe as well. Women are choosing to not bring children into this world for many reasons. The only way to offset that population deficiency is to invite immigration to your country, otherwise life as we've come to enjoy living in a democracy will begin to unravel in about 25 years from now.
We either have to start having babies, or we have to rely on people from other countries to have babies and bring them with them when they immigrate to your country. It's one or the other, make your choice.
