Do you insist your teen daughter changes if she’s dressed too explicitly or is it *none of your business* honestly curious

I kinda see both sides
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
My mom protected me and set boundaries,so glad she did.
Jennster · 18-21, F
@Justmeraeagain but what if they’re unreasonable about what you’re wearing - like everyone’s got different ideas about what’s acceptable
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@Jennster Since mom and dad payed the rent I went by their rules...when I left it became my own life /own rules
If she’s a minor and you’re responsible for her safety, it’s your business. Fair or not, dressing a certain way may attract attention that she’s not ready to deal with, and if she’s too naive to understand, parental guidance is still needed.
Jennster · 18-21, F
@bijouxbroussard I guess the problem is who decides on how much attention it brings- like leggins, tight jeans, nothing skin-fitting, burqa lol
@Jennster I imagine it would be based upon the standards where she lives.
If they're living in my house it's my business.
I think that while your kids live in your house and are under your financial support then you have the right to impose certain conditions based on your values. You should ideally want to encourage their independence and their individuality but you also have an obligation to protect them.

@FishBotThing and just to point out, most sane muslims would not do this at all. They let their kids make the choices later in life.

We didn't have that problem with our daughter, but our granddaughter may push the limits. I think her mother will speak up.
Jennster · 18-21, F
@exexec your daughter just didn’t want to dress immodestly to impress boys?
exexec · 61-69, C
@Jennster She was an athlete and wore athletic clothing almost all the time. She only wore dresses on Sunday (under duress) and for formal dances. Boys were fine with that.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
We buy all her clothes together, so we can talk openly about what she wears and it's not really a problem. She's more likely to push boundaries on make-up . .
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
Define too explicitly?
Jennster · 18-21, F
@samueltyler2 I’m 19 it doesn’t concern me - I wander if people should tell girls what to wear or mind their own business
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Jennster "people," as in your parents??
Jennster · 18-21, F
@samueltyler2 lol stepdad yes
If you reprimand someone on appearance it kills their self esteem
Miram · 31-35, F
The best way to guide kids is by example and instilling the right core values.

Modest clothes, etiquette, dietary choices, life styles..they all are consequences of having the right values and mindsets. They follow naturally when you teach a child to find greater fulfillments than being attractive, liked, desired, approved...etc
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
We should be able to dress any way we want but the truth of the matter is dressing too provocatively attracts the wrong attention. When my daughter was a teen I made sure she did not dress explicitly. It’s 100% mg responsibility as her parent to make sure she’s safe and protected
IamBack · 31-35, M
It’s the parents job to discipline, either boys or girls

Being dressed properly is part of good manners, it’s a simple human fact 🤷🏻‍♂️
Jennster · 18-21, F
@IamBack yeah but I guess no one thinks about boys in the same way, wearing vests or tight shorts
@Jennster If a son wanted to dress like a Chippendale dancer, I'd quash that.
IamBack · 31-35, M
@Jennster undisciplined boys turn into undisciplined men

Undisciplined men turn out either on the street, in jail or dead

So trust me kiddo, it goes both ways
Morvoren · F
When you teach children modesty you teach them how to protect themselves from others.

Like 18-21F accounts that pop up asking questions about child nudity. Closet nonces.
@th3r0n God talk is society talk.
SJones48 · 41-45, M
I don’t have kids but I’d say modest especially if it’s a big and dangerous city
Jennster · 18-21, F
@SJones48 but shouldn’t women be safe wearing whatever?
SJones48 · 41-45, M
@Jennster It depends where they live
Jennster · 18-21, F
@SJones48 lol that’s probably really true
SteelHands · 61-69, M
If her reputation gonna sag like her body in ten years anyway I don't see any reason to protect her from herself.
Blondily · F
Because they let kids wear anything they want to in school nowadays.

@Jennster Not if they are ACTUAL school uniforms, rather than the sluttified porno / adult Hallowe'en costume version.
th3r0n · 41-45, M
@Jennster maybe you're very conservative then, and that would be a good thing, modesty is good
Magenta · F
Yes I would. And it IS the parents business if she lives under their roof and care.
ArtieKat · M
It really depends more on her age - "teens" covers a 6-year period.
I doubt it would have ever been a problem though.
Strict4u · 56-60, M
Definitely go make her change before going out
thisguy20 · 41-45, M
her life, her body: HER CHOICE
I'm pretty far from the none-of-my-business mentality. My idea of parenting is using a fairly long leash, but if she starts testing it, I won't be letting it go
pancakeslam · 41-45, M
what do you mean by *both sides 😲
