My dad’s engineering books. He was a self-taught mechanical engineer and inventor. The books have notes he wrote to himself, expanding on concepts, ideas for things he was working on. When I see them on the shelf…flip through them… it helps solidify my memories of him…and miss him just a tiny bit less.

When you say "self-taught mechanical engineer", did your father hold Engineering Credentials that he wrote engineering exams for to achieve those credentials?

@SandWitch Back in the day engineering professional groups credentialed individuals based upon proven aptitude and experience. My dad had those. But your comment implies your perception that he couldn’t do engineering work unless he wrote engineering exams, that is factually incorrect. In my dad’s case specifically, he worked in the design departments of Pratt and Whitney, General Electric, and Ford Motor Company. A number of things he invented were patented by those companies. He also patented several inventions on his own. So my statement was accurate.
I can also tell you, based on personal experience, that just because you went to school and got a degree in engineering, and have a professional license, doesn’t make you a functional engineer. I am an engineer…and yes I have requisite degrees and licenses, and 38 years of design experience. During my career, I have encountered degree’d engineers that I wouldn’t trust to design a dog house. I’ve also encountered contractors and CAD designers that knew more about real engineering than some of those aforementioned degree’d engineers.

That demonstration of competency still applies to this day, not just "back in the day" in your father's case. Let's be clear on that.
@blackarcher256 "But your comment implies your perception that he couldn’t do engineering work unless he wrote engineering exams, that is factually incorrect.
I never made a comment. I asked you a question. My question implied nothing. Your perception of what I allegedly wrote to the contrary is factually INCORRECT. Let's be clear on that one too.
YOUR perception that I said your father couldn't do engineering work unless he wrote engineering exams came straight from your highly defensive posturing; it did not come from from my question. My question made no such inference, implication or suggestion in support of your perception of what I said.
Because of your highly defensive posturing to defend your father's credentials as a "self-taught mechanical engineer", are you implying that your father is a Mechanical Engineer?

My boyfriend's wife used to paint terrible portraits and pictures that are not even to scale. I hate them, but my boyfriend seems to like them.

@Nimbus it’s not old, but the model didn’t go well in India because Enfield brought out lots of variances and won the contest.
Now this model has few buyers though personally I feel it is better than Enfield.

Family photos. My son isn't interested in them, and no one else would want them.
4meAndyou · F
@Nimbus The thing is, I had so many photo albums, which I inherited from my mother that there was no room for them in my apartment. I filled up the trunk of my car, and passed most of them over to my son, and he just leaves them in his basement. Most of them are water damaged now, and when I ask for something that is in his basement, he won't get it for me. I would love to photograph some of the photographs and digitize them.
So...my own family photos, which are few, are NOT going over there to be mistreated while I am alive.

The list is long. I have been thinking about it as I consider what my children will have to dispose of when we move to the old folks' home or die. My books that even a library won't take. Our photo albums since all the photos have been scanned. My antique turpentine tools. My metal file cabinet full of genealogy research material.
