Would you report a crime if you see it?

I just saw a robbery!! It was crazy as hell!!! I was walking and minding my own busines, and saw these two chavs stealing a huge smart TV from an open delivery van and run away with it!!! I was shocked to see that in broad daylight but I did nothing, I felt bad for the delivery guy he was very big and seemed naive didn't even know his van was open, my husband said you have no obligation to do anything about it.

I do report things when I see something wrong taking place, but the police have only acted once, when I have reported anything.
They were less than a minutes drive away from a school, when I saw pupils being kept against the wall separating the school grounds from the public walkway. The children were literally screaming, but the police drove away in the opposite direction, after thanking me for reporting it.
Another time two guys were planning to steal a car. The police told me to report it, after the crime had taken place.
Another time, and I can't even remember what I saw, but the police actually said they would wait to see if they got a report of this crime from another member of the public, before they would act on it,
I report anything, that I see, but the faith that I will be listened to, decreases each time that I try to do the right thing.

Not always. A guy I worked with told a story about him and his friends breaking into an abandon apartment complex that the government had taken over to make into low cost housing. It was actually brand new but unfinished. The company building it went bankrupt. He just out right described the crime how they broke in by sawing a hole in one of the roofs. He told how the security guard was in on it, who had brand new kitchen counters in their house from the place how they couldn't get the HVAC units they stole to work so they threw them away at the local land fill. He told about how since the US government was running it the FBI was investigating the crime. He said they all burned their shoes and clothing out of fear. He was very nonchalant about it like he was describing a fishing trip. I never knew him to make up stories, maybe to save his ass or something but not for fun. What he said was probably true . Telling a bunch of random guys you work with something like that had to be on of the stupidest things I've ever seen. I never even thought about turning him in but that doesn't mean someone else didn't. How many people did he brag about his burglary to? He loved being a gang member and that stupid life. Even after a punk from another gang hit him in side of the head with a hammer. Our boss told us he might not be coming back to work as he might die. No one was shocked or even much noticed that he was in on stuff like that. It took decades before I really thought about how damned stupid telling that story was. We were all in the ghetto working so it was just day to day life to hear something like that.

Depends on the severity of the crime. In this scenario, I'd be divided on what to do myself. On one hand, I'd feel bad for the delivery guy getting screwed like that. But on the other hand, he should know better and keep his van secure even if he's only away for a moment. I happen to work in procurement and leaving our delivery vehicles open even if we're going in and out to make a delivery that'll take less than a minute is a big no-no.

@Ducky he took one item left it open and went all the way inside a building to deliver it, then came back saw the van was still open, didn't notice the big flat TV missing, just closed it and drove off.
Yes. You should to help the Delivery Guy, as he may have protection under Insurance. If not body reports he may be suspected for stealing.

But your husband is also right. Because these things are being setup these days .. as an arrangement between Van Drivers & Thieves. He would have left it open on purpose and report theft later to claim insurance.

All depends on the country where you are .. As your complaint can also reach the Mafia to suppress you. Best is to write an anonymous letter date time and post it to the nearest police station and that you don't wish to get involved.

I would say something

Just think, that driver might be wrongly accused of crime he didn't commit.

That driver gets arrested and charged as felon because the television is worth over a 1000 dollars

If you would have spoke up. A innocent man may have never went to jail for something he didn't do

Delivery guy probably set it up. Him and his roommates needed a new tv and they’ll just write it up as not on the truck.
Collegegirl23 · 26-30, F
@JustEd oh but why were the theifs running so fast?
JustEd · 41-45, M
@Collegegirl23 🤔. Exercise
Familygirl · 46-50, F
Hes right you dont have an obligation to do anything, plus the delivery guy should know to, at the very least, close the van, when he's away from it

@Familygirl hopefully they can recover and not dock his pay.
Familygirl · 46-50, F
@Collegegirl23 i imagine they have some type of insurance, but he may lose his job

It depends where the crime happened. In US liberal enclaves, turning in a criminal means nothing. Even if they're arrested, they'll be out within hours due to cashless bail. If they know you turned them in, you'll have some problems. Bad policy creates more crime.
Teslin · M
I would have called 911 as it was happening, if I was 100% sure they were stealing it.
Collegegirl23 · 26-30, F
@Teslin I was just glad they didn't rob me too 😂
Teslin · M
@Collegegirl23 True 🤣
I am glad you are safe.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
@Collegegirl23 All you needed to do was call in the plate number of their car…
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
I like to think I would, particularly a serious crime. I guess i won't know for sure unless the situation actually arises.
Collegegirl23 · 26-30, F
@ChipmunkErnie I don't know if thie is considered a serious crime tbh.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@Collegegirl23 Sounds like grand theft, plus what happens to the guy who was responsible for the delivery?
Collegegirl23 · 26-30, F
@ChipmunkErnie they probably gonna fire him or dock his pay, it was a huge flat screen smart TV probably cost thousands.
Yes and have
In the UK there are so many cameras you will likely have cops knocking on your door asking questions anyway because you may very well be on camera as a witness.
Unfortunately, my eyesight ain't what it used to be...
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
There are no penalties for not reporting a crime in the UK but surely you have a moral duty?
Collegegirl23 · 26-30, F
@ninalanyon I know but I haven't seen anything but one guy's face.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Collegegirl23 We all have to make our own judgement about whether reporting would be effective of course.
Collegegirl23 · 26-30, F
@ninalanyon it's a big store they likely have millions of TVs, it's on them for hiring a guy who didn't even notice the TV was gone.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
Of course you should report it!
urbancowboy · 56-60, M
Yes, of course. Including a description of the criminal. You can never be too careful
LinuxBreaksWindows · 26-30, M
Seems like everytime i try to do the right thing i get screwed. Unless it affected me, id just ignore it.

I report it here
Monalisasmith86 · 41-45, F
How did they get into the back of the van without climbing the van 🤔
Thrust · 56-60, M
Oh Hell yeah. Even if nothing ends up happening - the process is the punishment!
just record it and put it on IG like all the other schlemiels.

or report it to the police. who won't do anything anyways.
