what happens to all the wonderful books when library's are closed

[c=7700B2]here in the uk, you often hear now of libraries shutting down, a really sad thing, but all the sacred books in the libraries? what happens to them? because many of them are irreplaceable, it would be a travesty if they destroyed the books.[/c]

They replace books here at the local libraries with new ones with a similar subject but relevant to the day’s politics and sell the old ones that are replaced at book sales to raise money to buy more library materials. There were some really good books that I enjoyed reading that were done away with this way. I went to the same area and of course political themed books were what replaced them. Sad because the ones that were gone were more of a cultural theme and humanitarian in nature. I found some of those old books on Ebay and purchased them. Some of the newer books were donated by various organizations with a political leaning.

I think the reason that "the powers" have it in for books is two fold -

Like @calicuz mentioned - they cannot make continuous money off them. You buy a book once, learn from it, there are no ads, and you can pass it on to someone else who may be interested.

Even when books do have ads, they are not invasive and usually relevant. Like the last few pages showing what other books on the subject the publisher has available.

Even bigger though is "the powers" want you to see and hear what THEY want you to instead of gaining knowledge elsewhere.

Yes, your last statement is very true.
Sadly, they often do get pulped. The cost of properly storing 100,000 books can be prohibitive.

there's a thing called the Google Books Library Project which has been scanning millions of books stored in major research libraries; I don't know if it's reached the UK yet but I think it has.

Due to copyright issues, the project has focused more on old out of print and/or out of copyright titles. In addition to massive projects like this, some well-financed libraries have been scanning their older books and making the images available online.

The US Library of Congress is one such:

If you destroy the books to where all copies of books are digital you can change the wording and within a generation nobody would know the difference

The only reason libraries aren't promoted or encouraged is because the Corporate World can't make money off of them. They'll burn those books and then sell them back to people via an online "subscription."

@CestManan

Yeah, or have it in your "library" on the website, for a monthly fee.

@calicuz let's just get away from the digital age and I'll go back to having books on our shelves at home

@dale74

Unfortunately my friend, there's no turning back now. 😞

I don't know but I hope they give or sell them to second-hand bookshops.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@CrazyMusicLover they have book sales here. There is library volunteer group that sorts and creates book sales twice a year. They use the proceeds to buy more library materials including books. Some of the donated books may actually get put on the shelves.

That's WEF for ya. You will own nothing and be Happy.....yes even they take away your knowledge while books are going completely Digital.

Making their own source of knowledge and rewriting history.

Well they're trying....can't say it will succeed further.

They usually try to sell the books. But not many people want them.
