Tips for living alone?

I may need to live alone this year and it causes me anxiety. I don't mind a few days alone, sure. But to live permanently alone kind of scares me. I have PTSD so I'm really wary of Little sounds, I'm overly hyper vigilant on my surroundings, so I fear an intruder, if they knowing I live alone. I am scraping by financially so I'm not sure how I can afford rent living alone... I would like to get disability ( I have very chronic PTSD) to help me but I know they deny you several times. So I feel helplessbut I'm really needing to not live anymore in my current place/space. Any tips living alone?

It is all I know, and I prefer it, since I have control over my time and space. Except for having to go to work, I have less control over when I do that, of course.

I live in an apartment, which is both good and bad. Good, because I do not need to worry about maintenance, and it is easy to request it with their website, or just walk over to the clubhouse and talk. I have lived there so long, that they know my name. The apartment manager is nice, and lives in the building next door.

The downside is they periodically need to enter for maintenance, so I have to scramble to tidy up (to permit easy access to things, and because I am embarrassed). And if they come while I am at work I am worried about somebody seeing my bills and other sensitive papers, so I hide them or put them somewhere in the corner under a blanke. Then I have to move it back.

Rent keeps going up, but not too crazy. Re-signing each year is easy, since it is all online and uses digital signatures. Every year I seriously consider moving, since I have been at my place too long! And my office moved and I want to live closer to work. I am now 30 miles away! Ugh.

It is pretty quiet and neighbors are nice. Yet some have loud dogs and kids, and some hold parties from time to time. A few years ago a drummer lived upstairs. He was pretty good so I did not complain. Then he was replaced with young ladies who had karaoke night. Awful, LOL! They had a good time, though.

I park outside so have to shovel out my car, which sucks, and scrape the windshield. But they clear the driveways and sidewalks.

Living alone, one has to stay on top of bills. But most of them have been automated, or could be paid online. I still write a few checks since it forces me to study the bill. I pay all credit card bills by check since I worry about fraud and errors, and like to have control over when and if I pay, rather than the money being moved by them, automatically.

Maybe you could find a roommate to split the cost and help you be more comfortable. I hope you can find some work. Maybe something where you work on a task with few people under good supervision and guidance, and do not have to deal with the public.

And always ask us for advice!

@JoyfulSilence For some reason this just popped up. Thanks for the reflective reply. These are good things to remember..I think online bills might be a good option. I typically pay with check. But it'll be one step easier online. And someone mentioned ring cam , and have mace in a couple rooms, just for peace of mind. Thanks again

Maybe get a pet, a lot of people seem to think a cat is a great pet....... I have one you can have lol 😆

Keep calming music on when you are alone. Or a favorite tv show. Keep your area well light and maybe get a cheap camera or ring for your doors. Make your favorite place in the house feel safe and go there when you feel a little anxious. Heated blankets help too.

Stray sounds can be covered by background music. So a stereo, or air buds with non intrusive music of your taste will help. Then a busy routine will help. Cooking and food prep.. Or even learning to cook or prep food for one (You Tube is great for this.. The point it to not feel alone, by being busy. Plan that trip for next year. D😷eclutter or clear out a wardrobe.. Anything really..

I have lived alone for years. Took a while to adjust to all the odd sounds but I know what they are are now. I pretty much keep a routine and keep busy. So living alone is not bad at all. Now I would much rather be bymyself.

If you are feeling insecure

- A couple of spray canisters of mace are $25 or so .. one in your purse, one in your night stand

- A couple tasers .. purse/nightstand

- Lady Smith & Wesson .38 w hollow points, just saying

- Sounds - a lot of TVs and some phone apps have screen savers w sounds that have soothing background sounds
- Crackling fireplace
- Ocean Waves
- Rain
- Etc

I lived on my own for a year and the first couple of nights were scary I’m gonna be honest. After that it was fine, I got used to it. It was a studio flat though so I could see pretty much everywhere.

I'm living alone too, my tip would be to treat the peace as a sumptuous feast for reading and watching videos. Wishing you the best 🫂

It may be hard for the first few days even weeks and then you will get used to it. Just keep yourself busy when you feel paranoia creeping up find something to distract it. Save some of your unpacking just for this reason as a distraction. Invest in some cameras so that you feel safe and secure .

It'll take a while, but you'll get used to it. Use an ambient sound machine or Bluetooth speaker to fill the void. Take note of any "inducers" and mitigate them to the best of your ability.

Get a dog. They will be there for you always and be happy to be with you.

Play the sound of a purring cat from YouTube. Not the solution to everything, but It is a nice calming thing.

Apartments are much safer than houses when it comes to intruders.
