Were you ever physically disciplined as a child?

Do you think it does more harm than good?

Sometimes extremely
yes I do….
I was disciplined but i was also beaten as well as whipped/tortured etc.

depending on what it was i would say the fear of messing up or doing things wrong did some good...

But the rest? No, it fucked me up pretty badly. Stuff like that changes you deeply in many ways.

@DancingStarGoddess so parents are not perfect and their evil children 😂
OscarTurtle · 61-69, M
I was. As were many children of the 60s-70s. I believe it made me the man I am today.
Yes to the point it became abuse.
It did horrible things I'm trying to undo to this day and I'm 36.

NEVER lift your hand on a child or animal. Even if it's the slightest slap.

First, it's humiliating - it's not how hard it hurts it's the fact you, a grownass adult that supposedly has the cognitive abilities to problem solve and understand decides to humiliate another living being by not explaining and being patient with them so they can understand.
It's never the child's fault it's always the adult that is absolutely incapable of administration and enforcing boundaries and rules that they decide to use such primeval, violent measures against an innocent child.

Second, you make the child fear you, make it feel worthless (your parents that are supposed to love you, don't think you're worthy enough of giving you the time to understand /mind you it's a young mind in development lacking all sort of adult skill /) and the child looses trust in the parent. They no longer trust you.

There are numerous studies about how hitting children is abusive. I guess the ppl hitting them don't read.
@greensnacks Sorry to hear and I do know how ya feel 🤗
@greensnacks it's the whole "but I turned out okay" argument, meanwhile they can barely emotionally regulate without making it everyone's problem.

Children are learning their emotions at an entirely developmentally normal rate. It's not a personal or a targeted attack when they struggle with it so punishing them for it will always baffle me.

Lack of discipline does a lot of harm.
Baremine · 70-79, C
@Baremine there's a big difference between discipline and abuse.

I was occasionally but don't think I'm worse off for it.

It was rare, but it did happen. At one point, when I was about four, my father was so upset with something I'd done that he decided to spank me. As he drew back his hand and hit me, I felt the pain and humiliation of it (which is the entire point, though that wasn't clear to me at the time), and I thought of what my mother had said when she caught my sister hitting me a few days earlier. I balled my fist up, slammed it into the side of my father's knee, and said "No! Use your words!".

Well, he wasn't going to stand for that, so he hauled off and spanked me again. And I wasn't going to stand for THAT, so I again punched his leg and said "No! Use your words!". He was obviously several times my size and strength, and had an unquestionable advantage, but I followed the universal Code Of The Little Brother, and knew that the only way to make the suffering stop was to make it more expensive than he was willing to pay, so we went back and forth for a while- probably only four or five times, but it felt like forever.

Eventually, he realized that the only ways it could end were him backing down or him beating me unconscious, and he certainly didn't want to do that, so he eventually relented. I think I won some real respect from him that day; so far as I know, he never hit me or my sister again.

Now, I don't have kids of my own, so it's easy to say that if I did, I wouldn't turn to violence, and I CAN definitely say that even in extreme cases, it's not something I'd do quickly or readily, but on the whole, I follow a very simple rule: if they can speak and reason, then why are you hitting them? If they can't speak or reason, then why are you hitting them?

Of course! In my day everyone was. No, I actually thought it taught me to be a better person.
Adroneandastrain · 46-50, M
Just at school when I did something wrong the vice principal gave me the belt, a few slaps of the belt on the hand.
Yes and all it taught me was this is how adults choose to solve problems...

It taught me how not to be as a parent . Not hit my son once and I'm proud of that fact . We communicate .
Yes, mine would be termed abuse by today’s standards.

It definitely works for good but it must be done the right way!
No, I wish I had been. I knew my parents wouldn't touch me, so I took advantage of that in every way, shape, and form possible.
@Khenpal1 What drug are you on today exactly? You've been giving some crazy responses to people on this post.
Khenpal1 · M
@Magicianzini the drug is writing of Americans on social media 😉
@Khenpal1 Well, at least we share recreational activities. There's that at least.
Khenpal1 · M
it depends , but it should not be first choice.

I was beaten and broken as a child, it made me a nervous and introvert teen, and im guessing it made me who i am today.
GerOttman · 70-79, M
Yes And yes.. Warning, can also resilt in likelong kink!
Rabbit420 · 70-79, M
Yes I was physically punished as a child. In all actuality I was physically abused as a child. I didn't get spanked or slapped, I got beat. That being said, as long as it's not excessive or brutal it's not detrimental. A good smack on the ass never hurt anyone!! Some adults actually pay for it!!!!
Bottlerocket · 26-30, MNew
Yeah but i don't think it's necessary in a technological dependent world. Being disconnected now holds a lot more weight than when i was a kid
4meAndyou · F
I still resent the.parent who always chased me and slapped me as hard as she could right across the face. And she is dead. So what does that tell you?

I've seen abused dogs who NEVER forget their abusers and hate and fear them and anyone who even LOOKS like them. Some of the dogs become vicious, some cower and hide...and only rarely do they recover.

People are not much different.
Baremine · 70-79, C
@4meAndyou there is a huge difference between discipline and abuse. Spanking is not abuse. However there are some people on here that are so stupid they don't understand there comes a time where a person is to old to spank.
GoFish · 41-45, F
i was and idk
I have been. It doesn't do any good at all. Just teaches a child to suppress their emotions until it comes out much louder at a later time. It's a temporary and lazy 'solution'
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I was told I was getting wooden spoon but I don't remember it and my mother says it had zero effect.
@CrazyMusicLover My gran used to say that and once she washed my mouth out with soap for swearing to much 😳
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Never. Nor verbally (as in yelling/belittling).
