@greensnacks I think that was probably specific to where one lived.
Before we moved to the suburbs, there was a man who used to come into our little neighborhood and look for children.
Two of my schoolmates were hurt (molested) by him and my parents wouldn’t allow me to walk to school. The neighbors reported it to the police, but the man was well-dressed, etc… and nothing was done.
Some of the men in the neighborhood, fathers, older brothers, decided to go looking for the man and enough people had seen him that he was easy to find. They beat him, not fatally, but he stayed away after that.
This was in the 60s.

@greensnacks It was. He was lucky to be alive. I remember then the police were coming around, asking questions about "an assault on a citizen". It was the neighborhood’s turn to be unconcerned.

People fearing that all electronics would fail, and the electric would shut off on 12/31/1999 at 11:59 pm because some thought the clock would think it was 1900 instead of 2000. People bought electric generators that never got used. Stocked up on supplies like toilet paper. 1/1/2000 12:00 am came with no disruption of power due to clock failure.

Having a phone call end with either you or the other person slamming down the receiver.
If you lived in the boonies, being on the phone and hearing a neighbor ask you to get off the line so they can make a call.
Absolutely nothing on tv after midnight, when all broadcasting ends, with the national anthem playing and a picture of the flag.

Being the remote control for your parents. Having to walk across the room every time they want to change the channel, and if you complain, they tell you, "Oh, you're young, you've got energy."
Not that I ever minded. But now that I think of it, no kid will ever have that experience.

@bijouxbroussard You're going to think I'm making this up, but that happened to one of our TVs as well. It wasn't that the knob broke, but it got pulled off and rolled underneath something too heavy to move. 😆
