Try new things, even if they scare you. As long as they're generally safe

My most extreme case was getting a job in Scotland despite never being outside of Norway before.
I didn't know anyone there, what to expect, or even where to live before moving on my own.

I only lasted 3 months, but the fact I actually went through with the move itself, and pushing through my initial fears and anxiety has made me more brave in general.

Whenever I gotta go somewhere unfamiliar, even in my own area, I think to myself "hell, I moved to Scotland. Ofcourse I can do this"

@TheRealBarbossa thanks for sharing, glad it worked out for you, you believed in yourself and jumped and the world made the steps appear for your feet to land on, there is a magic in the that ' ask and the universe answers' bit i havent experienced in a while and i dont know how it works but ive wasted alot of thought trying to predict or capture it, it works but im not supposed to know how or why
TheRealBarbossa · 36-40, T
@Rudboy41 I'm terrified of the unknown, but taking that leap of faith made me re-evaluate my whole life.

I'm not daying you should do something as crazy as I did, but pushing yourself out of your comfort zone will make your world so much more interresting.

Noone knows what the future homds, but taking safe risks will help you adapt to whatever may come.

I sold everything, bought a van and lived on the road for a year to dedicate myself and my son to seeing more. I used to force myself into uncomfortable events, gatherings, classes, meetings, books, volunteer jobs, regular jobs, anything at all to get new stuff moving in my mind.

And certain things were dropped on me and I had to figure it out over and over alone.

Next I'm going to move 3000 miles away and learn a whole new ecosystem, city life, more culture, new people.

I am in constant pursuit of new things to learn.
Rudboy41 · 41-45, M
@ScreamingFox that sounds exciting, i'm sure you learn't alot about life. I really liked that movie 'into the wild' the idea of "rewilding" yourself and being like chris mcandless, completely free of society and its trappings. Then i read the book and the author put a sober perspective on chris's journey pointing out what a rookie adventurer chris was

by comparing the stories of other alaskan adventurers before him who were wiser and actually lived to tell their tales, it undermined chris's adventure. A victim of the scarcity that we can't escape anywhere on earth especially if we choose to leave the societal rat race.
Take a study course online or do volunteer work. You could get out more and mingle with people, maybe take a bowling as a hobby or something. Take up any hobby, including painting or even learning the guitar. Redecorate the house little by little. You'd be surprised at how amazing it makes you feel. Start cleaning out things you've had for years and will never use. That's very rewarding. Make new friends.

Pareto's rule. You want 80% of your life to be order, and you can use the strength and stability of that to tread into the unknown as 20% of what you are exposed to.

I'll use my current progress as an example. I do a LOT of college and university courses. Once I've done several in one area, I'll then move into certification in another area that has a lot of crossover with what I've already done, and then once I've got quite a few credentials in that area I'll move to another and by that point I'm thinking "I've covered much of this topic in a previous course, I just need to apply a some new details within this new context".

And try to monetize the domains you move into. If you are able to, then that will be a concrete, objective proof to yourself and others that you have effectively mastered that domain. If someone is willing to pay you for your work then that is telling you "your contribution in this area is so great that I am willing to contribute some of my limited resources and time to access it".
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Therealsteve I had a variation on your theme. Thirty years on staff at a major university ZI found myself attending lectures, workshops and other classes and auditing reading lists of so many apparently unrelated courses where I found obscure linkages that interested me..😷

Travel .. w my son(s), brother or even coming up .. alone if needed

Hobbies .. Getting serious about amateur photography

Working out / eating better

Took a retirement seminar .. looking at some other things for adult ed at the community college

Volunteering .. have worked with the local foodbank, Habitat for Humanity in the past

etc
Rudboy41 · 41-45, M
@BrandNewMan i volunteered for habitat for humanity when i was in varsity, for extra credits, the hardest thing was helping put up the roof, carrying heavy roof tiles up a ladder at least 20 x that day. I feel asleep on the bus ride back to the dorms, id never been so exhausted before. But it was enriching to see how people in the informal settlement, who get granted govt housing live and go about their lives.
BrandNewMan · 61-69, M
@Rudboy41 Was doing it on Saturdays when my wife was working as an ER clerk with a couple older guys I worked with. Really enjoyed it.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I'm not the best person for this but I try to search for new music, try to cook or bake something new.
What I do not do but people recommend to me is visiting new cafés or traveling.
Join volunteer organizations, such as helping the elderly, or working at a food pantry, beautifying a local park; so many volunteer opportunities.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
Travel. Not just as a tourist. Go spend time living and working among the people in other places..😷

Go to a cafe you like by yourself, sit there and open a journal with a blank page. See what will happen.

@Boeing Drugs.
Boeing · 36-40
@MrBrownstone but are you suggesting he'll take a drop of it or he'd better let it go
Rudboy41 · 41-45, M
@MrBrownstone i tried mushrooms and it was definately a mind expanding trip, but the thing about drugs i found is that, yes, they open your mind but you can't control where your mind takes you when you're on them. Deep meditation can achieve tbe same results in a more gradual way but at least i can control where my mind is going. Bit like climbing a mountain in order to see the spectacular mind opening view from the top, meditation is the long winding path and druga are the cable cart or helicopter ride with someone else flying the chopper.

Quit your job. You're obviously done with it.
