They usually have some pretty good impacts, influences, and guide expectations but ultimately everyone decides who they are and how/what they will do for themselves.

Yep. Any parent will tell you that kids come out with baked-in personality tendencies but beyond that kinda rough form of identity the rest is all gonna be built on your experiences.

@craig7 It's an interesting question. Children of abusive parents or of alcoholics sometimes fiercely reject the type of lifestyle they've been subjected to. In other cases they copy it: abused may become abusers; but alcoholics' kids may opt for life as total abstainers. What is it that determines which circuit the switch will energise - copy or reject?
