Do our experiences make us ?

CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
The earliest ones definitely. But I believe that we can at least partially break the cycle if we are aware enough.

Yes in my opinion your experience make up most of who you are. How you respond to things in your environment is your personality.
Umile · 41-45, F
@GuyWithOpinions well put
ffony · M
No, our parents made us. You wouldn't believe what they were doing at the time! I just CAN'T picure it.
Pretzel · 61-69, M

Umile · 41-45, F

@val70
It's both nature and nurture
And ever the twain shall meet.
They usually have some pretty good impacts, influences, and guide expectations but ultimately everyone decides who they are and how/what they will do for themselves.

Trying to give away the very small parts of agency people ever get in life seems like a bad plan to me.
Tarnished · 26-30, M
For the most part.
UndeadSona · F
Yeah basically
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Yep. Any parent will tell you that kids come out with baked-in personality tendencies but beyond that kinda rough form of identity the rest is all gonna be built on your experiences.
Depends on the level of impact it causes.

Most of the times, experiences brings out who we really are.

Some take it as experience and become experts. Some take it as a mishap and stay away from it ..

Definitely... You become an amalgam of everything you've experienced
craig7 · 70-79, M
Indeed they do - for good or ill.
ffony · M
@craig7 It's an interesting question. Children of abusive parents or of alcoholics sometimes fiercely reject the type of lifestyle they've been subjected to. In other cases they copy it: abused may become abusers; but alcoholics' kids may opt for life as total abstainers. What is it that determines which circuit the switch will energise - copy or reject?
Baaaaaaaa · 26-30, M
In general, our reactions to experiences make us.
AuRevoir · 36-40, M
Sad? Yes, obviously that’s what they make us…

That's what I like to call 'The Even-More-General Theory of Relativity.' I see it as applying to the whole of existence :)
