Carry your car keys in your hand. With the key pointing out. This was recommended by a police person talking to a group of students. Use it on the neck in self defence. Hope you never have to.
Not illegal in the uk.
I do that from time to time in a dubious street. A precaution yes. But I feel safer.
Walking alone for a man is not too bad, and I can run, But for a woman you have to be so careful.

Totally agree with you. You don't owe anything to people who you don't know that have done nothing for you and who are of unknown character. Basic courtesy can be given if chosen but that does not mean entertaining a conversation.

You're absolutely right, you didn't owe him a damn cent of interaction that you didn't want to provide. Wanting to be left alone isn't being stuck up. It's quite the opposite actually....he was stuck up for thinking your attention was a requirement.

The points you've made in this post echoed what I've thought before.

No one owes anyone a conversation. Existing outside isn't a conversational prompt.
Right on.

A cop, lives in my building; teaching me that 1000 yard stare. Very unsettling in situations like this.

@Punxi don't people look like ants from a thousand yards away?
