Halloween A Big Day for you as a kid?

Was Trick or Treat popular when you were a kid? I think it’s changed a lot since Covid as hardly anybody comes to my door. What was your favorite candy to get when you went trick or treating?

I only got to go trick or treating once or twice. Mom claimed it was because she was afraid of all the razor blades in apples and poison in the candy stories, but I'm sure it was just because she didn't want to be bothered with taking me around for it.

Come to think of it, the only times I did get to go trick or treating were when I went with a bunch of kids being taken by their parents.

@DunningKruger definitely never touched anything that wasn’t sealed. We heard the razor blade in apples stories too. I never saw that happening. It was a big day for me as I was a big candy eater!

@4thdimensiondream There was never a confirmed case of anyone ever finding razor blades or ground glass or anything like that in their treats. The only known case of kids getting poisoned by Halloween candy was when their father tried to bump them off for the insurance money.

Yes, we roamed neighborhoods with no adult supervision. We knew which houses to miss and which ones to hit. Whole candy bars were the best. We left after dinner and were told to be home by a certain time, probably 8:00. We were never late.

@exexec sounds very similar to mine! Good times.

Yes it was a big deal. Kids all over the place. I enjoyed just about anything, especially chocolate. We also got lots of kids at our house where my mom put on a witch's hat as she gave out candy.

They don't celebrate Halloween where I'm from. My parents didn't celebrate, rest of my family do not celebrate it. It has never been a part of my life.

I see it and know the history. Yet I wonder why you celebrate it. It was a festival for the pagan Celts, then adopted by Christianity, and it is now a day for Westerners to spend money on candy and costumes. The spiritual meaning is null and void. There is no harvest to celebrate. There are no spirits to appease and keep at bay for the winter. No saints to worship. Nothing.
@yestestvennaya You are quite the hit at parties, aren't you?
4thdimensiondream · 61-69, M
@yestestvennaya just a fun day. Nobody really cares what it really means. Kids and adults love it.
@4thdimensiondream I think people need holidays sprinkled through the year, and that helps maintain community and mark time.

We had a carnival at school. One Halloween our elementary school burned down and we stood in the front yard and watched.

@tobynshorty wow that’s crazy! Everybody safe I hope.

@4thdimensiondream oh yes all were outside when it happened.

It wasn't a 'thing' in the UK when I was young. Only in the last thirty years or so.
@supersnipe That's what others from the Isles have intimated here.
Yes, it was.

Snickers.
