Yeah, as soon as I start talking politics to my girlfriend, she gets depressed and says we need to move.
In general, I live by the mantra: "we didn't start the fire". Ultimately, the world's always been a heaping pile of toxic waste and the only things you can really control is how you live your life and how you treat other people.
It's important to stay informed, to try to do right by your neighbors and your community, but it's more important to stay true to yourself. If you live by your principles, none of the headlines can shake you from your life's work

While I understand you feelings toward the constant influx of negative events,It's also good to keep in mind a quote from Arthur C .Clarke:"The newspapers of Utopia would be very boring ".

Previous to Trump's re-election we routinely had the news on TV. Now we almost never turn on any news except the local news -- it's too depressing and too scary. It's bad enough seeing what going on reported in the newspaper -- yes, we still get the local newspaper -- and on social media without watching 24-hour news on cable. :(

I've been reducing my intake as well. I think we're about to get into bad times, but the not necessarily as bad as the panic mongers want people to think. I still see updates here and there to get an idea of what's happening. But I tend to wait a couple weeks when possible to let the overactive media cycle calm down. Usually the facts are much clearer and less sensational if you read a late article rather than a breaking one.
I only get my news from npr and try to not spend too much time listening to it . Just enough time to feel like I know what's going on in the world . Not just in US. Otherwise, I'd never leave my house .
I don't watch the news at all and haven't for several years. I'm a happier person because of it.

I've felt this way since autumn 2023 but in these last few months it became unbearable.

It’s all negative no matter what side you’re on.
