White reggae band silenced by dreadlock row in Switzerland.–
Swiss reggae band "Lauwarm" was forced to halt a gig after being accused of cultural appropriation by audience members who complained about two of its white (!) members wearing dreadlocks.
The organiser of the concert in a restaurant in Bern, Switzerland, stopped the performance saying that a number of listeners had complained they felt “uncomfortable” because the band was committing cultural appropriation.
Evil cultural appropriators: Swiss Reggae band "Lauwarm"
The cultural purity which those wokies demand is not far away from "racial purity". 75 years ago, the ancestors of those "woke" idiots felt "uncomfortable" when white people played jazz, (because N word music).
It is bizarre, very closed minded. Same with music, anyone can play any style. It’s funny, reading this article, “the offended ones” are really the true racists. They think only blacks can wear dreadlocks and play that genre of music. That’s racial profiling at its finest@helenS
@Jimthere4fun Yes. Likewise they could say guys like Keith Jarrett, John Abercrombie, Michael Brecker, John Scofield should never have played their excellent jazz because, you know, "cultural appropriation".
I don’t think people know what cultural appropriation is. It has to be an adaptation that’s disrespectful, exploitive, stereotypical, imperialistic.
Hair is hair. It will go into dreads if it’s thick enough.
It’s funny that it’s the hair and not white dudes doing a decidedly Afro-Caribbean musical form. But if they had gone that route, they’d have to give up blues, jazz, rock and roll…
White people can only play the spoons— or cultural appropriation.
Quite right! White European people have no right to wear dreadlocks. Black African people therefore have no right to wear European style clothes, drive cars, use telephones, fly in aircraft etc. Only Spanish can play the guitar Only Italians can eat Pizza Only Americans can eat at McDonalds. . .
As usual, it’s the authorities who behave most ludicrously. So some members of the audience felt uncomfortable. So what. If they didn’t like it they should leave; perhaps write to the newspapers; perhaps even ask for their money back. But if they asked the organisers to stop the performance, they should have been told to f*** off.
@helenS that is colonial thievery and certainly cultural appropriation But what would London have its people view for the past domination of other humans if they give it back and, Lord have mercy, sHOw sOmE REsPECt
I was really hoping everybody had realised 'cultural appropriation' was the biggest nonsense ever. Does that mean people from Africa are not allowed to wear trousers? How stupid is that. When I was in Arabia (yeah somebody on here was upset by that word as it sounded 'colonial'), I considered buying the local traditional garments - they looked more appropriate wear for the climate, glad I didn't bother now if it causes idiots to get upset.
@helenS Yes and the irony, well 2 ironies really firstly it wasn't anybody from the Middle East complaining and secondly not long after I'd had that discussion the tourist advertisements for the Middle East, used the slogan 'visit Arabia'. Any doubts of it's use were blown away for me at that point.
@helenS I read about a teacher here getting disciplined for refering to her class (in an all girl school) as girls and not students. Apparently it's wrong for her to assume they all identify as girls.
@MrAverage1965 How times change. When I was at school we were boys (sometimes “you ‘orrible boys”) or occasionally pupils, never students. Students were at college. And if at school someone had said they wanted to be called something else because they “identified” as something other than a boy, they might have been caned, or beaten up by their fellow pupils!
@helenS Good example. UK dub was pushing boundaries in the early 80's ,more so than in Jamaica at the time. I'm really into the contemporary productions from Mugo's HiFi,from Glasgow: [media=https://youtu.be/CRaCWnpoIaw] (in this case voiced by the talented Italian born Parisienne Marina P) -and yes,it was produced by white guys who wear kilts.
At its root, reggae music is a melting pot. Bob Marley's dad was a white British naval officer, after all.
@dubkebab That retro technology is beautiful! Reminds me of Brooklyn-based Daptone Records, a magnificent company where the Budos Band, Antibalas, Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley produce[d] their music. Analog only. And you are right, of course. Reggae is a melting pot. Those woke idiots want cultural purity, which is just one step away from racial purity. Oh and the song you posted is great. 🌷
