Near forest fire on my farm January 28th, 2025. I used all my Godly good luck up maybe for 2025.

Being it is winter with a lot of snow on the ground and no burning bans in the state of Ohio. I decided to burn a pile of brush at the very outer edge of my forest while cutting firewood. The pile smoldered and did not take off burning as I cut my first load of firewood and took it to the garage to unload for splitting later. As I go to the garage the wind kicked up fast and pretty hard. That made the brush pile burn through the snow and spread like crazy. I returned to the fire and tried to get it contained and put out, but after an hour of trying I ran down to the house and called 911 reporting a brush fire getting out of control rapidly on me. The rural fire department was notified and arrived 20 minutes later as I was now fighting a woodland fire on my own. an hour and a half later they had it contained and burned out and left. my farm.

I was not in trouble for anything, and I thank God I did not lose my forest just three plus acres of brushy area and heavens forbid if it burned my entire forest then the neighbors socking me with millions of dollars of debt for the neighbor's timber value. I thank God it was contained and put out. Or I would have been bankrupted.

I did suffer having my jeans burn off from my cuff to my knees and having my boots melted away. I was standing in socks and what looked like shorts when the fire department arrived and took over as I collapsed from heat and smoke inhalation.

Again, God saved my bacon literally and did not allow me to suffer burns, just sever heat exposure to my skin.

One Lucky Willa.

We regularly have forest fire warnings in winter here in Norway, snow on the ground doesn't mean that the brush isn't tinder dry.

Glad you survived.
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
@ninalanyon No forest fire warnings or burn bans here this time of year in OHIO, USA. Cannot compare my area to Norway's. Just a freak thing with how the wind kicked up and burned through the snow. The Ohio division of forestry conducts controlled burns this time oof the year in Ohio. Just a freak wind.

Thanks though

@WillaKissing It's not every winter, but this side of the country is relatively dry compared to the west and sometimes we get a winter that is consistently below freezing but with little or no precipitation called a barvinter (bare winter). Then even if we do get snow later it doesn't do much to wet the timber until the end of the winter when it thaws.

I hope your sexy legs are ok!

@ninalanyon They are fine thanking you!

Wow! That's what scares me around the farm. I've mowed a sizable patch around the barn. The grass on the south side was quite tall.
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
@Tastyfrzz I could not mow forest! It was the area behind the red barn.

@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON Yes thank you very much!
TexChik · F
You be careful! We always carry those 2 gallon pump sprayers when we work out in the brush
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
@TexChik With the snow laying on the brush and the smoldering the fire was doing at first, I never thought it would move. The wind that kicked up showed me wrong.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
With Easter right around the corner hopefully you'll take the fire department a nice ham over
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
@MarineBob We are so rural Bob that only one guy the fire chief is on station at a time the rest are volunteer. I think I will make a donation for their equipment fund instead.
Holy cow! Thank God you're ok and that the damage was contained. 🙏

@Lilnonames Thank you!
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
They won’t send you a bill will they?
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
@cherokeepatti That I am not sure of, I know they do for ambulance runs, and if I burned during a burn ban, I would get fined in court. but they said perfect time of the year and who knew the wind would kick up like it did. They said I did nothing wrong. The bill thing will have to wait and see.
