Can we demand a public apology from Will Smith?

As a fan of both Chris Rock and Will Smith, I think Will Smith was so childish. Chris Rock’s jokes were very funny and he didn’t deserve to be smacked in the face for telling a joke. Maybe Will was drunk or high or something. If he does not apologize, then he needs to grow up because he is setting the wrong example. Just like Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift in 2009, Will Smith is totally out of line for doing that. Interrupting a comedian/presenter at an award show doesn’t make you look good.

Who wants to be the butt of a joke in front of a million people? The whole script was tasteless and a low blow. No one should be roasted over an auto immune disease that I'm sure she's already self conscious enough about. Whether staged or not, it was just wrong on so many levels.

Too late for that now, Will received a standing ovation at the academy for his actions.
Once the wife cries in public.
It is on!
Budwick · 70-79, M
I'd rather demand an apology from democrats and media for all their lies.
Lilymoon · F
Ricky Gervais said way worse and never got smacked. LOL just sayin
Celt43 · 46-50, M
@Lilymoon they were my thoughts exactly 😁
Lilymoon · F
@Celt43 Right? haha
Faroutcat · 46-50, M
@Lilymoon Good point! Ricky Gervais probably would’ve made a similar joke about Jada’s bald head. It’s hard to ignore the elephant in the room. If she didn’t want anyone to talk about it, she would’ve wore a wig. Not everyone can shave their head and still look as good as Jada.
We're so quick to judge others without looking at ourselves first! If your wife was diagnosed with a disorder or cancer and someone makes a joke about them losing their hair what would you do?
@Faroutcat You didn't but I'm trying to help you understand the effects a joke like this can cause. Jokes are meant to be funny I get it but not when it's touching on someone's personal life like cancer/diseases people have to wake up every day like this with no cure holding on to hope for better days.
Faroutcat · 46-50, M
@Souls My original point was that regardless of whether Chris Rock’s joke was of poor taste or not, that doesn’t give Will Smith the right to smack Chris and then yell F-bombs. Especially when he said he enjoys being a role model to children.
@Faroutcat I agree! I don't support violence he should have handled it better and/or spoken to him about it in private!
SW-User
Honestly he should apologize for being married to THAT.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User she has a boyfriend too. That probably makes it easy to trigger him
SW-User
@cherokeepatti He's clearly cuckholded.
4meAndyou · F
Will Smith did apologize, later, and Chris Rock does not want to press charges.

However, Smith's behavior was something that would NEVER have been tolerated in a fan, or a regular Joe.

If THAT had happened, the fan or regular person would have been hauled off the stage by security, and would now be residing in jail for assault. It didn't go down like that, because famous Hollywood actors have become, in their own minds, and in their own little bubble, exempt from the law.

I do think, however, that Smith has soiled his award by his actions. He has also soiled the legacy of Venus and Serena Williams.
Wow!!!! I have never seen anything like that!!
BlueVeins · 22-25
That seems like a good idea. Just went back & watched the footage and she does seem really uncomfortable. Doesn't justify slapping him in the face but it looks like a bit of a bruh moment.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
Being as I am not a fan of the entertainment industry I honestly don't care if two members of said industry decide to beat the stuffing out of each other. That aside I personally think it was pre-planned and staged for maximum effect. The Oscars are so dead they needed something to get people talking about them the next day. I am sure the two 'combatants' will be putting large pay cheques in bank for the slap heard round the world.
SilkandLace2 · 46-50, M
@hippyjoe1955 well, that's where I'm a bit eh, I'm 50/50, maybe 60/40, if put on the spot, staged, but there's definitely room for argument
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@SilkandLace2 I am not saying you don't defend your wife I am saying you don't walk up on stage and slap the comedian if he insults your wife.
SilkandLace2 · 46-50, M
@hippyjoe1955 well, i would, BUT, i read that he was laughing until he saw her reaction, which, if not staged, makes it "double eh", you can't laugh then go all hard and yell such things again after you go back to your seat.....🤣
Piper · 61-69, F
"We" could, I suppose, but I don't see much point in demanded apologies. Smith already publicly apologized for his action, sort of.
I don't think Chris Rock's joke was very funny at all, considering the reason why Jada Pinkett Smith shaved her head. I don't think Will Smith smacking Rock hard in the face over it was 'okay', either.
CassandraSissy · 26-30, TVIP
Oh, don't get me started on Kanye! That was totally different! He was the Chris Rock in that - berating poor Taylor and stating that Beyonce had the better album - shut up you loser, who the F&%k cares? I got Taylor's back on that one...she's amaze-balls!

Wil was more than justified...and, as a matter of fact, Chris should apologise - publicly - to both Jada and Wil. Very disrespectful!

😘

Kanye = tells everyone he's a genius.

Jimi Hendrix = humble guy thinks everyone plays better than him.

Says a lot, doesn't it?
Faroutcat · 46-50, M
@CassandraSissy Jada looked fantastic at that award show. She was talking to the press and overall seemed to be having a good time. She wore a designer dress. She certainly was not in a hospital gown or wheelchair. And she wasn’t wearing a wig because she looked fabulous with her shaved head. I know she has an illness but she certainly doesn’t show it. If she had announced that she was going to be in a new movie sporting her shaved head, everyone would want to go see it including me. So, I don’t see anything wrong with what Chris Rock said. As a comedian Chris is simply doing his raunchy humor like always. I don’t even think Chris was trying to be offensive. It was a G.I. Jane joke, not a joke towards Jada.
Is everyone supposed to walk on eggshells and tiptoe around Jada now because we are so afraid that Will might get mad again?
CassandraSissy · 26-30, TVIP
@Faroutcat Sweetie, 2 out of 3 people will have cancer. A lot of people that you might pass by in the street have cancer. They don't look like they have cancer...because...you don't have to look ill to have cancer....

Same with Jada's illness and condition. It's directed at her. She's already 'came out' with her condition throughout the media....so Chris would have to be insensitive or just plain...stupid! Which one? Up to the watcher.

The only other way it could have gone was if Jada shouted out that she had alopecia, which is not the kind of thing - as I understand - a person with that condition would do. Chris has, apparently, done programmes on black women and hair loss so you'd expect him to have a bit more about him than that.

🤔
Faroutcat · 46-50, M
@CassandraSissy You seem to know a lot more about it than I do. So I believe you and understand your point.
I’m not so sure if Chris Rock knew of her condition when he made that joke. Or if that was even his joke at all. Many of those award show hosts are reading off of a teleprompter and the jokes are written by comedy writers. I’m not sure if that was the case here.
As for the movie reference in G.I. Jane, Demi Moore was labeled one of the sexiest women in Hollywood at that time even with her shaved head. So, when I heard Chris comparing Jada Smith to Demi Moore, my initial thought was for it to be taken as a compliment; not an insult. Comparing any woman with a shaved head to Demi Moore would be a compliment.
Obviously Jada felt insulted in that moment. I hope she is able to get healing with her family and friends supporting her. And I want her to have a speedy recovery.
As for Will and Chris, I hope they can patch things up somehow. Will has made a sincere apology to Chris. It would probably be a good idea if both men seek out mental therapy from all this drama.
Fluffybull · F
Chris Rock's " joke" was disgusting and totally inappropriate.
Pfuzylogic · M
@Faroutcat
A bit of the personal attack there dude? Really?
I admired Will Smith and still do.
He handles his business perfectly.
Faroutcat · 46-50, M
@Pfuzylogic In an interview a few years ago, Will said he enjoys being a role model for kids and I believe he tries to do so in many areas of his life. But physically attacking the host and yelling F-bombs does not make a good role model.
In most award shows the hosts are reading from a teleprompter which most of the jokes are written by comedy writers. I’m not sure if that was the case here but regardless it doesn’t give Will the right to storm up on the stage.
Pfuzylogic · M
@Faroutcat
Will Smith apologized.
He defended his wife.
Words can viciously assault and Will took care of his business.

Looked at as a whole I think the whole thing was handled. Rock overspoke on a sensitive subject about someone in the room in front of her husband. He ended up with his face slapped. The womans honour was defended by her man. And he apologised for his conduct to the crowd. Not to the big mouth. As a bonus Rock gets free publicity for the tour he is about to do, to pay off a messy divorce. I dont see a problem.
Of course, Smith will catch some comment at the next Oscars from the hosts. But they will be careful.😷
Carlisle · F
I think both Will and the Oscar’s needs to apologise for turning an awards show into a roast show that none of the audience subscribed to

The only person I feel sorry for here is Chris rock. He had a job to do. That joke wasn’t that bad.
And the audience aren’t buying tickets for a comedy show. They aren’t prepared for what’s coming.
Badly organised
Faroutcat · 46-50, M
@Carlisle I agree!

Why would we demand an apology for something that was obviously staged?

@CountScrofula I just mean he should publicly apologize to Chris.

No u cant bully someone who has a medical condition innit
This post made me want to slap you.
Faroutcat · 46-50, M
@DarlingSelah bring it on! 🤣
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
Skipping over whether Rocks humour was funny, or in good taste, about a medical condition when the person and her husband are in the room in public, I am a little taken aback that just a few minutes after the event, Wlill Smith wons an Oscar , is geeted with a Standing Ovation by the WHOLE ROOM, makes a public aplogy for the disturbance on the spot and it takes less than a day for the public to turn against him.
Frankly i think Rock got off lightly and Smiths approach with an open hand rather than a fist was quite within decency.
If I was Smith, there would have been no follow up and the "Academy " would have been advised to choose their speakers more wisely in future. Its not like Smith needs the money and he could fund anything he wanted as an independent and snub the Oscars. Its not like they treated him well.😷
SW-User
[c=4C0073]he already made an apology[/c]
Faroutcat · 46-50, M
@SW-User I guess you’re right. I didn’t know that when I posted this.
GBPackersFan · 41-45, M
This whole thing is so gay I wouldn’t even have known The Oscars were even on if I didn’t see a thousand memes on Facebook yesterday. You couldn’t pay me to watch that garbage.
Collegegirl23 · 26-30, F
Me too I only found out about it thru Facebook memes maybe that's why they did it?@GBPackersFan
ravenhill · M
both guys should just shake hands and make up.
Why do “we” deserve an apology?
Faroutcat · 46-50, M
@Pinkstarburst Sorry, I guess I should have worded it differently. I don’t mean “we” deserve an apology. I just mean Will Smith should apologize to Chris Rock publicly for his actions. But now I’m reading that he already has apologized.
He did apologize. But the rest is between him and Rock, who’s made cracks about Jada before. Anyone can be pushed too far.
ASLAN · 26-30, M
Are you serious!!
Oh ffs 🤦‍♂️
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
In my humble opinion, Chris Rock's about as funny as toothache and Will Smith is a talentless attention seeker.

Just saying!
FreestyleArt · 31-35, M
I would pay the Director if He or she can make these two Beat the living shit out of each other
TryingSW45 · 46-50, M
I can’t believe there wasn’t even security
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@TryingSW45 I think this was rehearsed and not a spontaneous temper fit.
TryingSW45 · 46-50, M
@cherokeepatti Chris rock has been making fun of will smith for a little bit - and it’s all true… and funny

@RogueLoner Your answer is acceptable. I just disagree with you on how celebrities should conduct themselves in public and at award ceremonies.

@RogueLoner no he didn’t.
He could have called Rock out way more tactfully and not gotten onstage and strike Chris
