I remember the outside loo. It had a high cistern and in winter dad hung a paraffin lamp by it to stop the inlet pipe from freezing. This had the advantage of keeping the temperature there slightly above freezing as well as giving a dim light if a trip out there in the dark couldn't be avoided.

The house I grew up in had an outside toilet, one had to summon up the courage to venture out in winter to use it; more of a problem for females
