It takes a lot less mental effort to insult and dismiss someone than it does to defend your position with civility and logic

So the next time you meet someone on the internet who disagrees with you, just call them a bunch of names and then block them. It's easier than having to think

I've seen it both ways. People who project an aura of calm and openness completely lose their minds when you mention something "triggering" and profane mouth breathers who suddenly offer a moment of profundity and truth that makes you catch your breath.

I think its fun to challenge others on their beliefs and have your own beliefs challenged. It's invigorating.
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
@SumKindaMunster I hear that.

I think the calm types usually like to be prepared and have go-to talking points, and then crumble under pressure when they're met with something unexpected. I remember the time Ben Shapiro made a fool of himself on BBC because all of his go-to counter-arguments fell flat.

And sometimes you do realize that there's a nugget of truth behind the apoplectic fits that causes the caustic types to go on the tirades they do. You learn to have a little bit of empathy even for people you can't agree with

that's what we've come down to.

and if you disagree with someone you are either evil or stupid - probably both.
Miram · 31-35, F
What is there to gain exactly in defending words against a nobody?

Especially those countries away.

At this point I don't see any value. And those who come to me with disrespect can expect the block button. Because I kinda love myself too much to waste efforts on irrelevancy anymore.

I have enough to focus on.
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
@Miram You could make them look stupid. Set an example for everyone else. I always take a little bit of pleasure in running laps around bad arguments
Miram · 31-35, F
@TinyViolins I used to do that but retired. It is part of why I have many haters in the site especially older folks. They don't like confrontation and being made to feel wrong.
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
@Miram Yeah, I imagine the toxicity builds up over time. Not good for your mental health when you butt heads with so many buttheads. I guess I don't use this site often enough to tip myself over the edge.

You also gotta pick your battles wisely. Some people are just going to repeat the same talking points no matter what you say, so it's best to say nothing.

I usually prefer to go after the people that are particularly mean and nasty. If they're going to make other people's lives miserable, then I'm going to make theirs just as bad. I realize I can be pretty vindictive that way

I try not to engage with anyone in online debate if I can avoid it. It's a thankless task and there is usually no real intent to find common ground. The best discussions or even disagreements are with people who genuinely want to find agreement or work together.
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@SW-User 100% no point arguing. Conversations are different and agreeing to disagree or calmly having a discussion but people who can't have a discussion and like to insult people aren't worth speaking to

Finally someone has a much easier solution
Conservatives seem to avoid logical argument, and I'm their problem.
