Your best memory of school PE? And the worst?

Best: Outdoor hockey cancelled on a wet, stormy January afternoon. Relocating in the warm to do do gymnastics with my friends 🤸‍♀

Worst: Coming back after a lesson to find my school uniform thrown into the showers.

Worst = being taught the rules of Rugby on a freezing February aternoon - standing around on frozen mud , getting frozen ourselves whilst he explained to us that Rugby is a game for Gentlemen, Soccer is a gentlemen's game.

Best = mixed field hockey - but I did not understand why the girls had to dress as if they were doing gymnastics and we boys were properly dressed for Rugby - wierd....!!
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
@Justme264 We changed into them, then got told to take them off for hockey, gymnastics, etc 😩
Justme264 · 70-79, M
@GentleLucille So all the boys would watch you play hockey through the classroom windows?
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
@Justme264 Secondary school was girls only.

PE was pretty much very easy for me. I was good at sports and big and scary enough not to be a target. Sadly when I look back there's probably some people might remember me as their worst memory. For reasons that may be obvious I was overdoing the macho tough guy.
Nibblesnarf · 31-35, M
Best might have been far outperforming everyone else at doing chin ups. I have a deceptively good build for doing them, and I practiced them each day outside of PE back then, so I probably surprised a lot of people. (I should add that I was very ordinary at weight lifting in general.)

Worst was probably projectile vomiting after running my hardest in fitness testing. But even in the moment, my friends and I knew it was going to make for a funny story afterward.

Girl in 10th grade showing the class how to punt a football. She dislocated her knee and screamed till she got taken to the ER.

Another girl in 10th grade would come to class with dozens of hickeys all over her neck and other areas. So proud of it on Monday mornings. She would also brag that her grandmother had been the madam of a bordello.
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@cherokeepatti Carrying on the family tradition lol
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Longpatrol She wore those hickeys like badges.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@GentleLucille Apparently so. But she was really enthusiastic about showing how it was supposed to be done. I hated football after that, didn’t even want to watch it when a game was free.

Best: I was a varsity athlete, so PE usually meant doing nothing, but one of my coaches would send me across the street to the fishing tackle store to buy fish bait so we could go fishing together after school. Worst: Going for a long pass from our quarterback and running into the blocking sled, hitting my mouth on the steel spring and cutting my lip, requiring stitches.
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
@exexec Sorry about your injury. Fishing sounds fun though!
exexec · 70-79, C
@GentleLucille I had no idea at the time, but the doctor who sewed up my lip was my future father-in-law.

Best: when it was over and there was a whole week before the next one.

Worst: the entire experience of being made to feel inadequate, humiliated and embarrassed.

Apart from that, it was a riot.
Oneofthestormboys · 56-60, M
@FreddieUK Ah! Those cherished schooldays of the 60s and 70s eh? When it was legal to lock kids in a cupboard or chuck a hardwood board rubber straight into a kid’s temple…
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@Oneofthestormboys Oh yes...fond memories. As the saying goes 'You have to be harsh to be cruel'

I may have misremembered that last bit. 🤔
22Michelle · 70-79, T
@Oneofthestormboys So many memories!

Best grade 9 When I won first place on pull-up bars and beat the girl who was 100% sure she’d win . We ended up friends after that.

Worst in grade 4 we were running around gym and I tripped and fell on my face and broke my front tooth
emmasfriend · 46-50, F
I don't think anything qualifies as a BEST memory of school PE !

WORST memory: the communal showers afterwards, especially the laughter at seeing well-punished buttocks !
Royrogers · 61-69, M
@emmasfriend did you see punished buttocks often ?
Royrogers · 61-69, M
emmasfriend · 46-50, F
@Royrogers
Yes !
Mostly other girls'.
I can clearly remember my embarrassment when it was my first time to display some marks. On a second occasion, there was no embarrassment at all !
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
Best memory was when they cancelled PE, worse is when I had to run 2.4 had a migraine and threw up
The worst: being the worst in the class to climb a rope.

The best: after getting a Weider 110 lb weight set for Christmas, I climbed that same rope tout de suite a year later :D
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
@rinkydinkydoink Good effort!
TaraNice · 36-40, F
Best: playing hockey, because I was good at it!

Worst: all other sports, because I was really bad at them.
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
@TaraNice No near drownings, I hope!
TaraNice · 36-40, F
@GentleLucille only a couple of times lol
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
@TaraNice There was usually a teacher around to fish you out with a ring 😅
Oneofthestormboys · 56-60, M
The worst would have been standing in the defensive wall for a free kick on a freezing January morning, and the biggest kid in the school taking a run up from the halfway line to blast a pvc “school grade” football straight into your nuts.
Oneofthestormboys · 56-60, M
@GentleLucille Back then it was considered that it would “make a man of you”, and some paedophile PE teacher would take great delight in inflicting as much pain and misery as he could.
I went to an all boys school, and the only kids that were treated well were the sports stars. Everyone else was cannon fodder.
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
@Oneofthestormboys I am sorry about that 😞
Oneofthestormboys · 56-60, M
@GentleLucille That’s ok. Just the way it was back then.

It was 50 years ago. My only memory is wearing a shirt like this.
DownTheStreet · 56-60, M
We I made out with Laurie in the supply room while her boyfriend was running a 5K
