The first time, I had two friends die sophomore year. One passed at the beginning, in the first week and I dropped several classes but it was OK because we got 1 semester free withdrawals. When the other died in the spring, I dropped all classes. Unfortunately those counted against me. Junior year I had several illnesses and missed but by winter break missed too much to catch up. At the same time my mom was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer so I just left school entirely.
The second attempt, my fiancée didn't support me taking out loans. I found a program that work would provide tuition reimbursement but then they backed out due to the school's accreditation. Fiancée wouldn't support me taking a loan to stay even though I was so happy.
I got a bottom rung IT role and worked my way up the corporate ladder slowly into a role that should have and eventually did require a degree. I was grandfathered in having no degree due to years in my role equating to a degree. I'm not paid as much as my degreed peers.

@robertsnj I was a double major Psychology and Anthropology minoring in Studio Art
2nd attempt was an art school but I had to declare a degree that would help me get to a role within my company. The closest 'art' thing I could justify was Graphic Design.
Fiancee viewed our finances as shared [we already had a mortgage and car payment together]. He didn't want to take on more debt and didn't think the cost of the school would ever be worth what I would make as a designer.
Our wedding was already close to 'go' day by a few months when I dropped out. Still married.

Well, I dropped out a few times actually, but then later down the line when I became a mum I went back. Now I’m almost done with grad school. I kept dropping out because of bad life circumstances. There were a lot of terrible things happening pulling me in many directions. Couldn’t commit/focus.
robertsnj · 56-60, M
@WhateverWorks Wow congrats! Grad school for what? I saw a more than a few women leave in my days due to pregnancy or just family planning (found the guy they wanted to raise a family with) . That is understandable and certainly a gender difference that could be its own topic. You said mum--implying not in the USA where college is expensive. Is part of if subsidized?
WhateverWorks · 36-40
@robertsnj Mental health counseling . Hoping people work through their stuff and get their life back to something they actually want makes me happy.
I’m in the US. I went to school on a a few scholarships and some grants.
Nah.. in my case it was because I came from a.. really hard life. I kept trying to go back to school because I wanted things to get better, but the chaotic circumstances and my own mental health trying to cope wasn’t conducive to keeping up with my classes. I went back to school because I was pregnant (solo mother working towards providing a better life for their kiddo, etc.).

I studied Court Reporting. I loved reading, and that job was all about reading and re-reading. It wouldn’t have been considered rude or weird for me to be a fly on the wall at work either. It suited me.
I dropped out because I was moving out of state, and that program wasn’t available where I moved. So no transferring possible unless I switched to a different career, which I didn’t want to do.
Right now, I occasionally freelance edit or transcribe on Upwork. Before, I transcribed phone calls for the hearing impaired. When I start working officially again, I’d rather not do anything like this because it’s no longer interesting to me.

@Colonelmustardseed Court Reporting sounds really practical. I have few friends that are editors. Most of niche editors for a specific field and get more work offers then they can handle. Mostly for white papers as opposed to marketing material.

@robertsnj That’s pretty cool. Stressful, but it’s good that there’s always work.

I dropped out because I was lazy and unmotivated . I enrolled because I felt like that’s what I was supposed to do. Though, now I’m back in college for software engineering. Just wish I had the drive and focus then that I do now.

I realized that I was in the wrong career, I enjoy what I do now

@SW-User May I ask what you do now? What did you study in college?

SW-User
@robertsnj wanted to be children teacher

I finished college but half way through an old wise man told me the only thing college teaches is how to make someone else money. Then he said go learn how what they teach you can apply to making you money. No one ever got rich working for someone else......

@robertsnj Well I have 1 degree in management marketing with a minor in accounting then one in Philosophy. The business degree helped me in finances and running my own businessWhich I shut down after national healthcare came out and ruined small business. And the philosophy just makes me rethink everything I've ever done.
Strawbsy · 26-30, F
I dropped out of Sociology. I enrolled because I believed it was the easy way back then, that I had no other option.
I went into a business school the following year.
I’m a Traffic Manager / Media Buyer now.

I dropped out after the first semester from a tourism academy. I got in since I grew up in a touristic place and that was the advice I was given by parents and teachers.
A year and a half later I entered fine arts academy after a lot of preparation ..and I'm now an artist and happy about it:)

I dropped out of an Open University Masters degree. It did not affect my career, and life moved on.
I found one module helpful, and money well spent. But I do not need letters after my name.

@SW-User So you have a BA? (not to put letters behind your name). What is your career?

SW-User
@robertsnj Unrelated.
I worked with troubled students, the ones society would rather forget.
About qualifications, I did laughing and grief, with a little mystery.
