I went to conventional school, but my mother was a teacher, so I had some home-schooling in addition to what the school taught me.

I can still remember the moment I "got" what reading was all about. (I don't remember how old I was, but this was before learning reading in school.) My mother had taught me the alphabet and the corresponding sounds, and she finally showed me a list of vocabulary words, on which I practiced "sounding it out."

I distinctly remember being puzzled by "can". I came up with "cuh -- ah -- nuh". That didn't make much sense. My mother encouraged me to say the sounds faster. But I kept separating them. Finally she said "can", and the light went on. OH! You're supposed to blend them together!

I don't remember what the following words on the list were, but I know that I was successful with at least most of them.
My mother was a teacher. She taught me and my siblings how to read before we began kindergarten, because we wanted to learn and she figured it would be an advantage. But that was the only way in which we were homeschooled.

@bijouxbroussard Homeschooled? Not exactly. My mom was not a professional teacher, but she taught me to read and do basic math well enough that I didn’t have to attend kindergarten.
@jackson55 I attended kindergarten, but when we moved, I was skipped—to the second grade. I ended up graduating from high school at age 16.

Only in the sense that my family encouraged learning; my grandfather lived with us and was a retired professor and college president, my Dad was a high school teacher and administrator, and my Mom was an honors History student in college. I went to public school from kindergarten through high school.

By necessity. I was bedridden for four years as a kid, so Mom had to homeschool me. She was a teacher, so academically I exceeded my grade level when I returned to school. But have spent the rest of my life trying to catch up on social skills with my peers -- particularly those of the feminine persuasion -- with whom I had no contact during my pubescent years.

My friend was... he had girlfriends staying with him didn't have to go to school. I was jealous of that.
DragonFruit · 70-79, M
Not really, as I started in 1st grade (necer attended kindergarten).....but my mother abd my older sister taught me how to read and write a little before I started school, so I wasn't totally unfamiliar with the idea of school when I started.
Prettybratbi1tch · 26-30, F
Yup you and I were in the same homeschooling class don't you remember?
Prettybratbi1tch · 26-30, F
@Prettybratbi1tch
You look 105
Prettybratbi1tch · 26-30, F
@mindstruggle thank you I worked hard to look like this
Nope, I went to a normal school. I just had to cross 3 mountains, survive an avalanche, and negotiate with a goat before first period. 🥹
ShepherdBard · 36-40, M
@mindstruggle 🙄🙄🙄
@ShepherdBard
Stop giving me that look, 😒 geez!
ShepherdBard · 36-40, M
Not really. However, in middle school I got interested in electricity and then radio. My father knew a fair amount about these things, and he answered many questions I had.
Thodsis · 51-55, M
No.

I've read more than one book and haven't been encouraged to marry my cousin...
Pherick · 41-45, M
Nope, very small private school though from K to 6th grade, so I definitely had a leg up when it came to public school in 7th grade.
tobynshorty · 51-55, F
No but I wanted to be!
ShepherdBard · 36-40, M
@tobynshorty I was for a bit. Was a lot different
No, I was collecting detentions like pokemons. Someone's gotta do it.
ShepherdBard · 36-40, M
@HijabaDabbaDoo should’ve known you were the bad gal type
@ShepherdBard I wasn't really a "bad gal" lmao I was just disruptive because I'd talk and laugh a lot.. and was always late... and jk, I wasn't that bad, I feel like they just got slap-happy with the new system and started distributing those detention slips like Oprah does with cars
ShepherdBard · 36-40, M
@HijabaDabbaDoo can’t let the slips go to waste!
Punxi · F
I was.

Public offered no second breakfast.
thepeculiarpanda · 36-40, M
Yup, for 5th and 6th grade. 🤔
ShepherdBard · 36-40, M
@thepeculiarpanda 1st-5th here
thepeculiarpanda · 36-40, M
@ShepherdBard We had moved to Minnesota when I was in 4th grade and I guess the public school system there was just too darn liberal for my parents. XD

Also went to a private Christian school for 7th grade. Then back into the public school system haha.
