How do people learn to be good citizens?

Do you think it would help if mindfulness, meditation, philosophy, ethics, life skills - were taught in schools?
AbbeyRhode · F
I think the first thing they should learn, is that the earth doesn't revolve around them, and that other people have feelings, and rights, too. Parents need to stop spoiling their kids, and teach them to look beyond their own selfish desires.

@AbbeyRhode It's a daily chore to remind children that they need to respect others and use little examples that come their way as a teaching tool....

hi AbbeyRhode
I recognise your point here also.
Best w ishes
:)
AbbeyRhode · F
@cherokeepatti Exactly, it takes time, and too many people don't want to be bothered. They allow TV and video games to raise their kids, and then they wonder why they are dysfunctional.

@sogdianrock Thank you. :)

Parents must do it. I am very wary of schools, churches or other institutions teaching them to be 'good citizens'. They will indoctrinate them in what being 'good citizens' according to their ideology is
Cierzo · M
@CopperCicada You are NOT a white supremacist or nazi, a proof that family is more likely to fail in their indoctrination than church or school.
@Cierzo good thing. amirite?

when my grandparents went to school they actually learned american history, government, and civics. my grandmother was a housewife and once homesteaded with her family. simple practical woman. but she had all the articles of government memorized, famous speeches, important history. she also knew civic procedures like voting laws, how to fold and destroy a flag, how to address officials.

this was the product of the vision of horace mann who created free secular nonpartisan education to create functional aware citizens in american democracy.

we've lost that spirit. if we hadn't we wouldn't have had the leadership we've had since kennedy.
Cierzo · M
@CopperCicada That was a good education.
But think now...would they be taught all American history or just the part of it sustaining a certain narrative?
Would those speeches they had to memorize be 'cleaned up' to make them more politically correct.
In those times kids were educated to be adults. They were given foundations for life. I don't know how it is in the US. Here where I live they are trained to efficient workers and to follow a line of thought

It'd be good if parents would parent but there are other ways too. Set an example of what you'd like for others to be.
they tried teaching meditation and yoga for kids at an activity center here. it was protested by local parents as being "satanic". and despite scientific evidence that meditation lowers stress, increases attention, helps impulse control, and so on-- it was pulled.

It's all about morals
AnukBinary · M
@sogdianrock That all said. What you suggested in your question is the very things I was taught growing up. Things that were not available in school. And from a none bias point of view.
sogdianrock · 61-69, M
hi AnukBinary
well I suppose I am looking beyond the family as it fails many.
Best wishes
:)
AnukBinary · M
@sogdianrock oh okay, I now understand where you are coming from. I agree with you.

From their parents hopefully, from society, from the Bible ("Do unto others as you want them to do to you" Luke 6:31) , and hopefully from a trained conscious of what is right and wrong.
amvanquish · 51-55, M
It needs ro be taught by parents to begin with and followed up at school.
electropura · 31-35, M
It would help, but it's the responsibility of parents.
By teaching mindfulness, compassion and empathy.
