How do people learn to be good citizens?

Do you think it would help if mindfulness, meditation, philosophy, ethics, life skills - were taught in schools?

Parents must do it. I am very wary of schools, churches or other institutions teaching them to be 'good citizens'. They will indoctrinate them in what being 'good citizens' according to their ideology is
@Cierzo parents will do the same which is how i was indoctrinates into being a white supremacist.

@CopperCicada You can flee from parents more easily than from state, though

hi Cierzo ·
Sure be wary. I guess everyone has to do it. A child is raised by a village. The best way to avoid indoctrination is to have many different voices.
Best wishes
:)
@Cierzo yea? how was i to flee from my parents?
Cierzo · M
@sogdianrock However, the world moves in a way that voices sound more similar
Cierzo · M
@CopperCicada At a certain age you can. But you can do the same with IRS, police...
@sogdianrock yep. which is why i have associates across political viewpoints.

hi Cierzo
I am afraid I cannot discern your intent in what you wrote here.
best wishes
:)

@sogdianrock That the world seems to be moving more to an only acceptable line of thought than towards a diversity of ideas and voices
@Cierzo agreed.

i just resist absolute viewpoints such as the family is enitirely sacrosanct. i was raised by a nazi, my grandfather molested by cousin, my uncle beat his kids raw.

without an ethical reference outside the family we'd all be addicts or in prison. none of us have.
Cierzo · M
@CopperCicada You are NOT a white supremacist or nazi, a proof that family is more likely to fail in their indoctrination than church or school.
@Cierzo good thing. amirite?

when my grandparents went to school they actually learned american history, government, and civics. my grandmother was a housewife and once homesteaded with her family. simple practical woman. but she had all the articles of government memorized, famous speeches, important history. she also knew civic procedures like voting laws, how to fold and destroy a flag, how to address officials.

this was the product of the vision of horace mann who created free secular nonpartisan education to create functional aware citizens in american democracy.

we've lost that spirit. if we hadn't we wouldn't have had the leadership we've had since kennedy.
Cierzo · M
@CopperCicada That was a good education.
But think now...would they be taught all American history or just the part of it sustaining a certain narrative?
Would those speeches they had to memorize be 'cleaned up' to make them more politically correct.
In those times kids were educated to be adults. They were given foundations for life. I don't know how it is in the US. Here where I live they are trained to efficient workers and to follow a line of thought
