Measles outbreak in New Mexico spreads to Texas

I recently read that my state, New Mexico, had more cases of measles diagnosed in 2024 than the entire US reported in 2023.

I understand that some are afraid of vaccinations. I was born in a time when vaccinations were not yet available for some diseases. As a toddler, I had a close brush with death from polio. My brother was deaf in one ear due to mumps, so I have a different perspective.

If you are a parent who fears vaccination, I implore you to discuss the issue with a pediatrician. Reconsider.

When I was two years old, the Pertussis vaccine almost killed me.

But I realize that I was the exception.

My mother made sure I got my polio shots. I got the MMR shot years later.

I have had conversations with doctors about whether subsequent vaccines are similar to the Pertussis one and pose a risk to me. They have assured me that they are not.

I have gladly gone for the vaccines for Shingles and Covid. I have gotten my Tetanus and Flu shots.

But, on the advice the doctor gave my parents back in 1954, I have never gotten a Pertussis booster.

And I think of my mother-in-law, who contracted Rubella while pregnant and gave birth to a deaf child (my sister-in-law). This was about a year before the Rubella vaccine became available.

@Mamapolo2016 I was also premature -- by six weeks. I was kept in the hospital. My parents told me that what the doctors put me in was technically not an incubator, and I never ask for details. I got the impression that my parents were aware of the possible risk too much O2 could bring and that they were constantly nagging the doctors about being careful.
@DrWatson Your theme song should be “I feel lucky”!

@Mamapolo2016 Very much so! Somehow, I managed to get started in this world while remaining intact!

My daughter on the spectrum, my son is ADHD and Joel's son was down syndrome. They have all gotten their shots. Do I blame the shots.... No I don't. I know many other family with kids the same age that didn't. People just look for any reason to blame things on. It's easier to blame someone else so you don't feel like it was fate..... 🤷🏻‍♀
@Cigarguy101 I honestly don’t know enough about the autism/vaccines controversy to speak to it.

I am so glad to hear you speaking with confidence and contentment. It does my heart good.

I had my own "near death experience" with the early polio vaccine. I was only 6 months old and had a severe reaction. It saved thousands of lives in the long run but there were some problems early on. There is a book called "Dr. Mary's Monkey" that was a fascinating read and had some very interesting anecdotes about those early problems!
@GerOttman I wasn’t sickened by the vaccine, which became available within months after my recovery. It was polio that got me.

I was beyond lucky. One leg is ever so slightly shorter than the other. I had to learn to walk again. But I CAN walk. And breathe.
Measles is a master spreader. It can persist in a room for up to two hours after an infected person leaves; depending on how much coughing and sneezing had been done.

According to epidemiologists, herd immunity against measles requires about 95% of a population to be vaccinated. This takes into account the fact that the measles vaccine, for whatever reason, leaves 2% or 3% of people not fully protected.

I will never understand antivaxxers 🙄 I wish them luck 💀

@tenente Luck is what they rely on - which is tough on their kids. 🙁
@tenente I do not refer solely to any administration our country has had. It would be a great deal of help if the government didn’t lie to the country that elected them. That distrust is nothing new.

Has Jr. ended the required vaccines that the military get before they go to foreign lands?

@deadinternet

It would not surprise me if he did. The worst part is that some people might just do it. The amount of people that don't want to think for themselves and just be lead around by the nose and believe anything is nothing short of astounding.
